Hi I want to upgrade my pentium 4 Processor to Intel® Core™2 Extreme Processor X7900 (4M Cache, 2.80 GHz, 800 MHz FSB). All I know is that my socket is PPGA478. It says on the intel website that this processor is a PPGA478 socket > (http://ark.intel.com/products/31730/Intel-Core2-Extreme-Processor-X7900-4M-Cache-2_80-GHz-800-MHz-FSB) So can I upgrade to this? Do I simply just swap the processors around? Or do I need to know anything else to upgrade my cpu? If you need any more information please ask me. Thank You.

It depends on your old processor's FSB speed. Look up your processor model and see if it has an 800 MHz FSB. If it does, you can upgrade without problems and you should be able to just switch the processors out. (Although you may need to update your BIOS/ ask Packard Bell if the specific processor is supported by the BIOS)

My processor is an Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor supporting HT Technology 3.06 GHz, 512K Cache, 533 MHz FSB. Does that mean if I want to upgrade the new processor has to be 533 MHZ FSB? Sn1992 says it will work...Sn1992 would the X7900 work on my computer yes or no?

Hey Sn1992 I dont have a ppga478...I checked on cpu-z and it says i have a LGA 775! which means i can get a quad core on my system is that right? cos i remember you saying i can get up to 1300 MHZ

oh so can I get a quad core? does it have to be FSB 1066 or lower?
sorry I beg your pardon. I checked with CPU-Z that I have LGA 775 socket for definite, i thought it was ppga478 because someone else on the forums had the same processor as me and I assumed it was the same. My mobo is a Packard Bell BV istart 2369 and my cpu socket is LGA775

Dude..That's an 1155 H61 motherboard.so no.
Umm..Mk-2001:You might can put the processor in there;but if that comp never came stock with a CPU like that, chances are it's not going to work.
OEMs tend to get their BIOSes written with microcode to only support what they plan on using.
you would probably be better off with a new setup.I mean. yeah..You could get a new mobo...cpu..but then..you're gonna need a new hard drive cuz that one's locked in to that HP setup..new power supply wouldn't hurt either..graphics card..RAM..etc..
JUst to illustrate..I stuck a pentium4 Northwood 3.0 in my buddy's laptop and it didn't boot.Same socket..chip works fine, board works fine..but not with each other.

@sn1992 I looked at cpu-z, do I need to look inside my system? and if so how and where do I look?

@schmuckley Are you trying to say my motherboard is a HP 1155 H61? How did you work that one out if my computer is Packard Bell??? Please give me a link of where you found this information. And I want to upgrade to the Quad core processor Q9650 not the laptop processor x7900. My cpu socket is a LGA775. Also that is a good idea I could probably get new motherboard...But how do I install one in my case? I dont know if that would fit...or should I just buy just a new gaming PC?

aha! i think i have it...i think its a Ati RC410...and it also says on motherboard FSB800- dont think i can get a quad cor e right even though its a lga775? Hmm whats the best graphics card and processor for my motherboard?

How can I use PLGA 775? My computer is a LGA 775. I did a search on the intel website for LGA 775. And I got intel pentium processor, Intel Celeron Processor and Intel Core 2 Duo Processor- but which ones the best one? They are all 2 cores
