hello ,
i am looking into entry-level server processors, and comparing these two.

http://ark.intel.com/compare/80908,80916

I have two questions:
one processor cost 50$ more then the other, yet the cheaper one has an extra GPU. is that considered a loss in the server processor criteria , or the price deference goes to the 100 MHZ extra from the 1271 v3 or other unwritten feature ?

my second question is , "Embedded Options Available"
i have tried to understand what that means , as other E3 made a year before has that , and if any one can elaborate what that means in the real world , that would be great.

thanks alot

J

I assume you have looked at this: http://ark.intel.com/compare/80908,80916

As for your questions. The 1271 is most likely intended as a workstation processor, not a serer processor, since servers typically run headless and don't need the added TDP from the graphics. The more expensive processor runs slightly faster, I'd attribute the price to that. There are no "unwritten features" :)

Embedded options refers to the processor as part of a packsge - the easiest way to think of it is part of a turnkey solution or a "SoC" (System on a Chip). IOW, embedded into other silicon. For purposes of a server, that's immaterial.

If a Xeon CPU does NOT have integrated graphics(i.e. E3-1230 v3), and it's intended use is to run a server, does it mean that a graphics card must be purchased in order for a user to even see a screen for OS install? (BIOS splash, Server 2008R2 install screen, etc.?) I would appreciate your input on this.

Excellent. Quick response too. Thank you for that :)
