If you have ecc RAM then you need a Xeon unless you want to replace your RAM.
Why do you want to upgrade? Your current CPU is a great one.
They are expensive if you buy them new but used--$200 for a 6 core CPU is not bad.
The 4790k is mostly better (though it is has 2 fewer cores, doesn't support as many PCI-E lanes, dual processors, or as much RAM), but it is a new CPU. Intel makes it so that you always get the best performance for your money buying new CPUs. They pretty much never lower prices for older CPUs. Of course, buying a new CPU requires buying a new motherboard as well.
