Now I must admit I have been out of the hardware scene for a while not having needed to upgrade my pc I have not been following things as closely as maybe I should :)

My question is this, from what I hear Vista is only going to be fully functionally unlocked with the 64bit version for Hi Definition DVD etc etc etc.

I am not really an AMD Fan so what I am trying to see is, if I build a new PC in the next 6-12 months what 64 bit processors does intel offer or are they going to be offering that anyone knows about.

I dont want to start an AMD verses Intel thread so please no comments on amd, I am just interested to see what everyone knows about 64bit intel processors, which they think is best for the money. I would consider overclocking but I would say most likely I will use as standard.

Just about all of Intel's new chips are 64-bit.
Currently what you want is a "Conroe".

These chips are are more powerful than anything Intel has ever released and use less power. A real Win-Win.

Even the lowest model E6300 beats most any chip on the market 6 months ago. The other models are E6400, E6600, E6700, and E6800.

The E6600 goes from 2mb to 4mb cache.
The E6800 unlocks some multipliers.
Otherwise you get a mild clock increase with each chip.

The E6300 and E6400 are great for extreme overlocking and the other
are still good at over-clocking.

Intel will soon be shipping Quad-Cores.
Many changes are afoot so you are best to ask when you are ready to buy.

While Intel rules the power market now, after a few years of absence, AMD now has some deals in lesser expensive chips and have slashed their prices across the board.

If you can wait, I would.
Currently memory prices are out of this world.
Maybe double what they were 6months ago.
You will also be able to get you system with Vista Pre-Loaded or at least you will not need to worry about upgrading.
You will also be able to see which products have the best Vista drivers.

All that said, now is also a great time to buy.
Never has so much power been there for such a little price.

All the new Core-based processors are 64-bit, as far as I know. Anyone know any exceptions? I'm happy to be corrected.

The Xeons are definitely 64-bit; they run OS X in 64bit on the MacPro.

yeah, im not in a rush and by the time I do buy I will have done a lot more research, just wanted to get a few opinions based on todays current situation. Thanks for the quick replies guys.

Any Socket 775 Processors are 64-bit. And there is an exception to the Core's being 64-bit, the Core Duo Laptop processors arent 64-bit.

Any Intel cpu, right now supports what is called EM64T , which is extended memory 64-bit tech. This means that the cpu can address more ram that 64 bit os's and applications require, like a woodcrest xeon does on server 03 x64 or OSx. It lacks the full 64-bit instructions that are on the athlon 64, which has true 64-bit extensions, like the extra registers in stuff. Now, I am not a fanboy, cause i myself have a core 2 duo. It will run applications and stuff in 64 bit, but nowhere near the level of my friends athlon 64 system. Just throwing in my two cents

There is little difference between the two.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EM64T

For layman consideration, one is not significantly superior to the other.

Some have posted benchmarks in which 64-bit helped AMD more than Intel on a percentage basis. However deeper analysis showed this did not really mean much.

I will use some simple numbers as an examle.
An AMD Chip yields 50FPS.
The Intel Chip yields 100FPS.

The AMD ship sees a 20% boost from 64-bit while the Intel chip only sees a 10% boost.

The result is 60FPS and 110FPS. A 10Frame boost for both.

Actually EM64T is a complete duplicate of the AMD 64bit extensions, including all the additional registers. While P4's with EM64T generally are not up to the performance levels of the AMD64 in 64bit mode (but then again they were slower than AMD in 32bit too), the Core 2 does not suffer this problem.

Core 2's are considerably faster than AMD64's working in 32bit mode, and somewhat faster at 64bit as well. Sure the performance gap is alot smaller in 64bit, but clock for clock then Core 2's still ahead.

Early EM64T chips were missing 2 instructions that were part of AMD's spec, as intel were working from an early design model of amd's spec, but that was corrected before Core 2 was released. Core2 contains the complete AMD64 bit instructionset.

Where did you find this information? I would be interested is giving it a glance- don't wanna look like a dumbass and I wanna get my facts straight 😳

Which "facts" are you asking about?
Just read Tom's or Wikipedia or other places.

The 64-bit modes are completely compatible.
Performance is up to argument, but I would tend to agree with his general statements other than I dont really think AMD really gains vs Core is not significant.
