Question Intel 9400F vs Ryzen 3600 with gtx1660ti

Hi all,

My current configuration is:

Amd fx6300
Gigabyte 78 series mobo. Don't know exactly sorry.
16gb gskill ram
Msi 1660ti ventus
Corsair Tx650 smps

My motherboard died recently and I want to revive my system at minimum cost. My usage is mostly casual gaming and slight ligtroom editing.

As AM3+ platform is dead and even stock out in all markets, I am thinking of two options.

Intel 9400F vs Ryzen 2600 or 3600.

Need your help in deciding which one to go for future proofing and cheaper mobos. As I will not be changing cpu but may face dead mobos in near future.

I see, well you might consider getting a good overhaul computer parts as well, than purchasing a AM3+ MOBO u can find one but quite expensive I guess. both of the processor will do you good however since you mention you do editing and a casual gaming you might go for Ryzen which is good for editing and games and also multi-tasking jobs will do you good.

Hi thanks for the reply.

My budget as of now is around 400$ which is roughly around 25000 inr. And Intel 9400F is cheaper than both 2600 and 3600 in my country.

My dilemma is if I purchase 3600 then finding a suitable mobo will be difficult coz I have read many places that bios need to be updated first using 2nd gen.

Price difference in 2600 and 3600 is 62$. Is the performance bump is worth this price?

I see you can go for the Intel if you like whichever you can get the cheap parts that you can, the performance difference of the 2600 to 3600 is big so it is worth the price.

You can purchase a cheap MOBO like the 3XX Series to 4XX series they are all 3rd gen compatible but yes you need to update the MOBO you can have the Technician upgrade the BIOS at the store some will do that.

Get the 3600 with a good B450 board like the MSI B450 Tomahawk. As for the BIOS update, just inform the seller to update your BIOS before shipping. Some boards like the aforementioned Tomahawk also have a BIOS flashback button which you can use to update the BIOS w/o the need to have a 1st/2nd gen CPU installed. Or just buy one of the MSI B450 Max boards which are Ryzen 3000 series ready.

Alternatively, if you wanna save some money, get a 1600 for much cheaper and OC it to about 3.8-3.9GHz which will get you close to 2600 levels of performance. Plus, you can always upgrade to a faster Ryzen processor in the future and sell the 1600 to cover some of the upgrade cost.

But whatever you do, get a good motherboard. Its much easier replacing CPUs and RAM modules than having to change your motherboard because you aren't satisfied with its feature set or performance. Also, a better board will be better equipped to handle future CPU, RAM or other upgrades.
