Intel 946GZ Chipset and 1066 FSB

Hi,

i have a Acer Power 2000 Ultra Slim Line Desktop and i am looking for a faster CPU. Therefore i tried to find some infos about supported CPUs.

The chipset is a 946GZ revision C1. And the factory built in CPU is a Conroe Core 2 Duo E6300 @ 1,86 GHz with FSB 1066.

Now what i wonder about is that all the intel spec i found on intel.com specifies that the 946GZ runs with FSB 800 MHz !!!

Does this mean, Acer runs the chipset and CPU setup outside of the spec?

And is it possible to upgrade to the Conroe E6700 @ 2,66 GHz / FSB 1066 or even to a Conroe E6750 @ 2,66 GHz with FSB 1333 MHz

The fastest Conroe CPU would be a E6800 /1333 / 3,0 GHz.

And finally there are the Wolfdale up to E8600 /1333 / 3,33 GHz.

Can anybody explain the "how it works"

There are lots of modified 945 and variants of such chipsets. Probably a cost saving feature.

I did have an AsRock 945 chipset that supports the 45nm Intel processor as well as 1066Mhz DDR2 RAM by overclocking.

I would imagine for that combination the CPU would be clocked down to 800MHz FSB, making the core frequency 1.39GHz.

It will tell you what the cpu and chipset are running at.

Following my assumption, upgrading the CPU would also result in an lower clock from the nominal value. The E6750 would run even slower than the E6700 as well. Also these processors are in very low supply and much too expensive for old technology I would not recommend upgrading. I would just save up and buy a new machine,or at least a new mobo/cpu combo, if you need more speed.

I discovered the situation, while running CPU-Z. The tool shows that the CPU is running with 1,86 GHz and FSB1066.

So NO down clocking. I would post here a screen shot, but seems not to be possible.

It is not clear, why it works as the 946GZ is specified for FSB800 ...

small update to whom ever it may interest: i have upgraded now my acer power 2000 to an E6700 and it runs now with 2.66 GHz and 1066 FSB. The Vista Speedindex improved from 4.9 to 5.5.
