The recent state of computer building has left builders with two choices. Either Intel and AMD. or AMD and Nvidia. i5 or Fx6300. 770 or 280x. These giant corporations have created massive operations that range from supercomputers to consoles - these huge companies have managed to snag every position in the computer world. Even Qualcomm has managed to dominate the consumer mobile sector. The stark reality is that these companies have generated so much capital that is virtually impossible to start an independent company to run against these massive companies.

Maybe the future holds better times.

So? These are companies for which the manufacturing facilities are in the billions. You can't be a startup in the x86 field - it's not growing, and there's massive costs to start up. There is Via/Cyrix, if you want to go that way.

Also, Qualcomm has nowhere near a monopoly in the mobile space. Samsung, MediaTek, TI (not anymore), Intel, Broadcomm, and nVidia are all active in that space.

It's typical of an industry with large startup costs. Same as how there aren't a huge number of satellite communications networks, or many other areas.
