Intel and graphics card

Would this: MSI R6850 Cyclone PE/OC Radeon HD 6850 Video Card - 1GB, GDDR5, PCI-Express 2.0 x16, HDMI, Dual DVI, DisplayPort, Directx 11, Dual-Slot, Overclocked

work with an Intel core i5 2400?

yeah. graphics cards and cpus don't have compatability problems.
Motherboards, PSUs and the size of your case is where you could run into problems.

Any lga1155 mobo (all i5-2xxx or 3xxx) will be compatible with that card though so you should have a problem with the motherboard.

What PSU and what case?

Ultra 650w atx power supply. I have not chosen a case yet (tho a mid size tower is likely). I am going to pick the motherboard based on the processor I get. (This one seems a very strong bang for my buck.)

Post your whole build in the "new build" section. Read the sticky for the format first though. Also, you can leave certain items as "recommend one for me" if you haven't found one yet.

650W is fine for that gpu but you should get a better brand. That one is quite low quality. Easy rule of thumb is to make sure it's 80+ rated (has a little white, bronze, silver or gold badge with '80+' on it). Any rating is fine, as long as it has one.

However the listed comp pieces there are subject to change after I saw the performance of the Intel I5 2400. Unless there is a comparable one to this for a better price I will probably go with it.

Also the power supply hasn't given me any problems (I have used it for 5 years now. 😱)

Horrible power supply, swap it out for a quality seasonic, corsair, xfx, or antec power supply!

I wouldn't say horrible, just treat it like a 500W since it's 12v rail only does 38A. Reviews aren't terrible (i.e. I haven't seen anyone claiming fire hazard or saying it damaged components). But then I can't find any real reviews on johnnyguru or hardwarehaven.

I wouldn't recommend anyone buy one but many people have used them fine for years. It's not nearly as bad some of the PSUs on newegg.

okay I found one person say it caught on fire after he swapped his 6870 for a 7970 combined with an oced 2500k. I guess it doesn't have overcurrent protection. That's one in 500 some user reviews so take it for what it's worth. Whatever you do, don't draw more power than it's rated for (the 12v rail, not the 650W rating).

What type of supply would you suggest? I might over clock but not by much as I am not that techie. Something around the 500-600 range that wouldn't cost me my kidney. I am not familiar with what makes a good supply.

either of those would work. You could get a lower wattage one if you don't plan on upgrading the gpu much.

that's a very good PSU that would do fine for a 6850 and an i5 (overclocked or no) but don't expect to throw any GPU with more than a 200W TDP on it. (even a 200W GPU would be pushing it a bit more than I'd be comfortable with).

The 6850 is a 127W card btw. The i5-2xxx is 95W. Nothing else uses the 12v line, so nothing else really counts. Also parts are using less power now than before so two or three years down the line you should be able to buy a new midrange card (like the 6850 but in two years) that will fit perfectly on that earthwatts psu.
