Question Intel AX200 Randomly Stops Pinging

To start, I am a network certified engineer, however this one is stumping me!

I have a 2-year-old Windows 10 mini computer with an integrated Intel AX200 chip. It's worked great with my Wifi 6 router, but starting a month ago it is doing the following:

  • Randomly the internet will stop working
  • I still have an IP address and can see Wifi networks
  • During the outage, when I try to ping my gateway, it says "Destination Source Unreachable"
  • If I disable the wifi adapter in Device Manager and re-enable it still won't work (will connect but can't ping)
  • After approx 15-20 minutes, it will start working again and I can ping the internet
I figured it was defective driver update , but this happens on both the 22.130.0.5 3/15/22 and 22.160.0.3 7/19/22 driver. Happens 2-3 times a day. Computer stays on 24/7.

My internet/router isn't the issue - I have dozens of devices connected that have 100% Ping with no failures. No viruses on the computer.

Besides it being a defective chip (my computer isn't overheating and has no other issues) I can't figure this one out. Any recommendations?

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Computer stays on 24/7.
Could you please state the full specs to your system? Please include the BIOS version for your motherboard as well. If the computer is a prebuilt with an add-on networking adapter, please mention the make and model of the prebuilt and it's SKU.

As for your OS, what version(not edition)are you working with?

There is not much you can really change or set on wifi. You have already tried the replace the driver option.

You could check the ARP table and see if the gateway IP is mapped to the proper mac....it should not change between when it works and when it does not. You could also try to clear the arp table and see if the arp entry comes back when you attempt a ping. If you get a entry it means there is some kind of communication even if ping fails.

I would first try a usb linux boot image. This is mostly to see if it is a hardware issue or if it pays to keep chasing some strange windows setting. I guess it depends how often it fails and if you can use linux long enough to find it.

If the wifi is in a m.2 slot it should be easy to replace. I would replace it with a intel ax210 even if you don't need wifi6e. Both cards cost about $20 so you might as well get the newer one.
