INB4 "Why are you trying to update your chipset drivers?"

1) Went here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/
2) Downloaded update tool. Update tells me I have version 10.0.10586 installed, and the latest version is 10.1.1.14. Device Manager confirms driver version. "Infinst" folder doesn't exist in registry, so can't confirm version that way.
3) I download latest version and install fails from and "Unknown Error"

It gives me to option to "View Log Files", but there are 3 of them and they are super long:

"Chipset_20160522160728.log"
"Chipset_20160522160728_0_SetupChipsetx64.msi.log"
"Chipset_20160522160728_0_SetupChipsetx64.msi_rollback.log"

If anyone needs one these these logs to help, I can post as requested.

What kind of gig are you running? Hardware specs?

Asus P9x79 Pro Motherboard
Intel i7-3820 Sandy Bridge CPU @3.6 GHz
16GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3
NVidia EVGA GeForce GTX 560 ti
Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit

That would be because Intel has not released an update for their chipset for Windows 10 64 Bit yet. They have it for Windows 7 and 8 but not for 10 yet. I looked through the entire list for the x79 express chipset drivers and there is not one for Windows 10.

The best way to update your chipset drivers is through your manufacture of the motherboard. Here is the link for all the downloads, just input your OS and it will give you a list of all available drivers. http://https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/P9X79_PRO/HelpDesk_Download/

It is available for Windows 10.
Your next step is one that I've already considered as a alternative resort, and have opened a thread about that as well.

"Intel® Chipset Device Software Support

The Intel® Chipset Device Software contains support for the following:

§ Intel® Atom™/Celeron®/Pentium® Processor

§ 6th Generation Intel® Core™ processor family

§ Intel® Core™ M processor family

§ 5th Generation Intel® Core™ processor family

§ 4th Generation Intel® Core™ processor family

§ 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ processor family

§ 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ processor family

§ Intel® 100 Series chipset
§ Intel® 9 series chipset
§ Intel® C230 series chipset family
§ Intel® C220 series chipset family
§ Intel® C210 series chipset family"

You have a x79 chipset not a x99 or a x97.

I take it that list is from
https://downloadmirror.intel.com/20775/eng/ReleaseNotes%2010.1.1.14.htm

This is on that list and this is what I have:

3rd Generation Intel® Core™ processor family

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processors/core/core-technical-resources.html

This is the datasheet (scroll down) for my processor. It says

3rd Generation Intel® Core™ Processor Family

These documents apply to:

Intel® Core™ i7-3xxx, i5-3xxx, i3-3xxx processor family; Intel® Pentium® processor Gxxxx series; and Intel® Celeron® processor Gxxxx series

That's for your CPU. But you're trying to update the chipset drivers though. That chipset driver is meant for the Z97 and H97 chipset.

I understand that is my CPU, and the driver Release Notes says:

*********************************************************************************
The Intel® Chipset Device Software contains support for the following:
*********************************************************************************

§ 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ processor family

This means that this Intel® Chipset Device Software contains support for 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ processor family, there fore my i7-3820 Sandy Bridge 6 series chipset is included in this Chipset driver, as well as the 9 series and the others on that list.

Upgrading your CPU drivers won't give you any added performance.

The unknown error is caused by incompatibility. You're trying to update your CPU drivers but you can't pick and chose what you want to install. IF you don't have the chipset that it supports on there it won't install. You can have a 3rd generation core on a Z97 or whatever and it will install, but you don't have the chipset to support that driver for your CPU.

I understand that updating the CPU drivers won't give any added performance.

The 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ processor family (i7-3820) has a x79 chipset. The v10.1.1.14 driver, according to the release notes, is for 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ processor family, which has a x79 chipset. Therefor this driver is for the x79 chipset, the 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ processor family and the z97 or whatever.

No. The 3rd Generation Intel Core processor is its own entity. the 3rd Generation Intel Core processor is used on the x79 chipset. A chipset and the Core Processor are there own different things. So no I will not work.

Are you trolling me?

Not at all, I understand that a chipset and the Core Processor are there own different things, and I dont think you understand the statement "The Intel® Chipset Device Software contains support for the following: 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ processor family"

I do appreciate the help and time spent on this question, and nowhere does it state that The Intel® Chipset Device Software contains support for the following: 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ processor family "unless it has a x79 chipset, or has only a z97 or whatever chipset."

Also the z97 chipset isnt compatible with the i7-3820. In fact there are only 4 processors that are compatible with the x79 chipset: i7-3970X, i7-3960X , i7-3930K, and i7-3820. So also, nowhere does it state: The Intel® Chipset Device Software contains support for the following: 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ processor family "unless it is a i7-3970X, i7-3960X , i7-3930K, or i7-3820.

Question, is it the Intel Chipset Device Software (INF Update) ?

It is

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/20775/Intel-Chipset-Device-Software-INF-Update-Utility-?product=1145

which has this release notes

https://downloadmirror.intel.com/20775/eng/ReleaseNotes%2010.1.1.14.htm

And if your next comment is

"that is not for your chipset, this is

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/20622/INF-Update-Utility-for-Intel-x79-Chipset?product=1145

and it's not supported by Windows 10"

The Detailed Description for Intel® Chipset Device Software (INF Update Utility)
Version: 10.1.1.14 (Latest) Date: 2/4/2016 states that:

Not sure if this is the right driver or software for your component? Run Intel® Driver Update Utility to automatically detect driver or software updates.

which I did, and it download the Version: 10.1.1.14 drivers.

Well, I tried it myself just to prove it to myself. I have a i7 4820K Ivy Bridge, My motherboard is the ASUS Rampage IV Black Edition Republic of Gamers using the Intel x79 chipset. I installed a hotfix and a management engine from Intel and I still cannot install that INF update. Why? Because it is not compatible with my Chipset. Error Code 1603 tells me in the log that there is a device incompatibility with that update.

Error Code 1603 means "Windows Installer is attempting to install an app that is already installed on your PC." What version is your driver?

Edit: I got Error 1603 as well, which is interesting because I do not have this driver installed. But the log does state that the error "...note this may not be 100% accurate if translation happened inside sandbox".

Im giving up on Intel's driver and driver detection. Back to one of you earlier suggestion of downloading from Asus. This

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3067006/asus-motherboard-chipset-driver.html#18006362

I just ran a few diagnostics and did a couple of tests, the drivers will install for my processor but they get hung up when they try to go to install the chipset drivers. I tried to see if I could catch it and make it bypass the chipset drivers by telling it they are already installed but I haven't had any luck getting it to that point.

But since it won't finish the install it does a rollback of the CPU drivers.
