I was about to buy the e6750, however tiger direct has the e8400 for only 10$ more for a limited time. It's the new 45nnm core, so I think it would be better to get. However, I once read about how G0 stepping is better for overclocking, and the 8400 is C0 (whereas the 6750 is G0). I definetly plan to overclock. I can't find the article talking about stepping, so I am not sure what to do here.

I'm assuming the answer will be go for the 45nm core, especially since they are 5-10 degrees cooler Centigrade than their 65nm counterparts. Any thoughts?

If your mobo supports the wolfdale I would strongly recommend getting one. The 45nm cpu's are cool enough for serious overclocking with air cooling as you can probably read around and find out. Plus the E8400 is clock for clock quicker than the E6750!

Upon further research, it seems like C0 is actually the next step and therefore better than G0, so I shall go for it. Thanks for the advice.

Whilst the E8400 does OC like a mad thing the hike in voltage required for 4+ ghz causes a fair bit of heat and at 45nm electro migration is no longer just a theory.

I think yo are getting the E6750 and E8400 mixed up.
The E6750 takes a very large voltage increase and generates alot of heat at 4.0 Ghz.

The E8400 requires a modest voltage increase at best and still generates relatively little heat.

One you start trying to push to 4.3 you start needing to raise the Voltage to about 1.4v which is the maximum recommended voltage.

Only once you start moving well beyond the maximum recommended voltage to you need to worry about electro migration.

The folks having the problems are the ones trying to push the voltage to 1.55 or 1.6 which is well beyond the recommendation.

unless you have to get it from tiger direct, it's cheaper at Newegg.

They both will overclock well, but overclocking is your intent then the 8400 is by far the best choice. Depending on your motherboard. Not to mention it has 6mb of cache versus 4 with the 6750. That price on the 8400 is the same price you can get it for at newegg and buy.com probably zipzoomfly too.

Mine will not run stable @ 4ghz on less than 1.45v and under load gets upward of 75c. At 1.15v and 3ghz it hits 48c under load and as I have never had an E6750 I don't think I'm getting the two mixed up at all. 😉

 Monkey wants to steal peaches... and CPUs?

You better make sure he doesn't mark his.
