Hello everyone, I'm currently rebuilding/upgrading an extremely old HP Pavilion a1000 (AMD Sempron 64 3000, 512MB RAM, 40GB HDD, 250W PSU) and I'm thinking of buying a new CPU + Motherboard and a new graphics card. I was wondering if these items are compatible (I'm pretty sure they are but I need help from the experts):

The main reason I'm rebuilding this is so my nephews have something to use and maybe play Minecraft with. I will be buying a Geforce GT620 along with the new CPU+Mobo+Cooler. Do you guys think it's worth it or should I just throw the whole thing away?

If this post is really is from 24 May 2015, then that is a terrible setup.

Better buy an FM2+ motherboard and an AMD APU. A8 7650K would be best for best bang for the buck. If you need something cheaper but still good you can get the A8 7600 instead. You could get these parts for just as much money and they would provide much better performance.

There is no point in buying a Core 2 Duo or an 775 socket motherboard today.
No, the processor is not compatible with that motherboard. The motherboard only supports processors with either a 533Mhz or 800Mhz front side bus. The Intel Core2Duo E8400 runs at 1333 Mhz. Look for a motherboard that has the Intel P35 chipset.

alienaxuz,

I'm not a video gamer, but have made a game of getting the best performance for the least cost buying workstation systems. There are so many computers on Ebahhh that with a little patience I believe you could get a very good system for your nephews certainly for a total of less than $200 and without a lot of work upgrading. It's worth putting money into an obsolete system up to a point, but in your case, for about the same net cost, you can move a couple of generations newer technology and it will be useful over a longer period. This kind of system always needs something- sometimes the OS, HD, or graphics card, but you can start with a good basic system and have only plug in upgrades and settings. Researching, ordering and changing a motherboard is time-consuming and there are frustrations in getting old and and new to work together.

Some example of decent basic system to start with for little money, found in about ten minutes:

Important : Get a system with COA so you can reload Windows and use the original serial number. Look for the highest CPU clock speed within the budget.
