Intel Core 2 Duo upgrade

I have a 5 year old Gateway M-6843 that is running on an Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 (5 years old). I was wondering if it is worthwhile to upgrade to a Intel Core 2 Duo T7800. Also, if it does not increase speed enough to notice, what can I do to make my computer faster? Or is this the speed it will have till it completely goes down? I also was wondering if changing my Seagate 500 GB 5400 RPM hard drive would increase speed. This is my backup computer, but if I can make it faster it would be nice! Thanks!

no is not worth if you want a fair upgrade get a g2030 minimum or a g3220 but that needs a new mobo too.these are good cheap upgrades, if you wanna go higher go i5 3450 at least

You do realize we are talking mobile chips here right? OP, just do yourself a favor and get a new laptop. That one isn't worth upgrading anymore.

I know that with my current mother board on the computer, the best processor I can get is the Intel Core 2 Duo. Also, this is my backup computer. I don't need another one. I was just wondering if the computer would run any faster with 200 more fbs, and .6 more Ghz . Or what other components I can upgrade to make it at all faster.

Making it faster is mostly related to what you doing with that computer. If you don't plan gaming on that rig or rendering stuff then you don't really need an "upgrade". Just double your RAM and buy an SSD. It will feel like a huge upgrade unless you don't do some demanding stuff.

Changing the CPU on a laptop is a difficult task. The laptop is 5 years old; just use it as-is, and do not plan any upgrades.

It's great that you are capable of dismantling and re-assembling a laptop!

Laptops tend to heat up much more than desktops do. External cooling pads work well on the exterior but do little to cool the interior. This too must be taken into consideration.

So, considering I can take the computer apart, I shouldn't change the CPU or the hard drive. Either one would cost around $50. Actually, let me rephrase my question. Since I know I can take the computer apart, and an upgrade of a CPU or hard drive is very affordable; would I notice a substantial or noticeable difference in my computing power if i gained 0.6 GHz of Clock speed, and 200 more FBS? From an Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 to an Intel Core 2 Duo T7800.

Not really, the best solution is to do a fresh install of windows, and maybe a faster HDD/SSD, but for a laptop of that age IMO it is not worth it to do any upgrades.

EDIT: If it is stock(http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/2008/Avalon/1015608R/1015608Rsp2.shtml), adding more RAM and a larger paging file may also help, the HDD is more than capable. (looks to be an upgraded part already.)

Not substantial, but you will see an improvement. While you are at it, see whether you can add/upgrade the RAM to something of a higher MHz. And like another [poster stated an SSD will make a difference but might be cost prohibitive.

Considering all this, maybe your best alternative might be to upgrade the CPU, but remember along with it comes higher temps and heat! I cannot estimate the effect of that.
