Depends on the motherboard, back in the core 2 days the memory controller was still on the motherboard. Some support DDR2 some support DDR3.

And there are some boards, especially late ones that feature support for DDR2 and DDR3, not at the same time, but as options.

Yes, there are some rare boards that have slots for both, but even on those you can only run one or the other you can't run both.
