Hello!
I am having my rig for 4 years now and I am planning to upgrade it in the summer.
So, the build is
Intel Core i3-2100 3.1 Ghz
Gigabyte GTS 450 1GB
Kingmax Hercules 2x2GB 1600mhz
Gigabyte p67-ds3-b3.
My CPU only supports 1333mhz RAM officially and I wanted to know how much harm/benefit an oc to 1600mhz might do.
Is there any chance of just shorting it and thats it?
I oc'd my gpu's clocks by now, and the voltage just a little and it's doing fine but never touched the cpu.
Sorry if everything I said makes no sense but I am the dumbest person when it comes to oc.

Solution
It seems like that CPU is barely able to overclock. Seems like you can only boost it by 5% of it's current amount.

It won't be able to reach 1600Mhz without major issues.
I think it's too much risk to do that. 🙁

I think your best option is to get a new CPU :) or rather not overclock it.

Solution

Thanks for the reply mate! I guess I'll stick to this until I change it.

you should be running the ram at it's rated 1600mhz speed

it has nothing to do with your cpu

go into the bios and set the ram to it's proper speed, voltage, and timings

or just let the motherboard do it by loading the rams XMP profile in the bios...

In short that cpu can not be overclocked much at all. 3-5% and even that can cause system issues because it will overclock everything running off the systems base clock. If you had a 2500K, 2600K, 2700K, or any other K type cpu that works in your system you would be able to overclock quite well as the cpu multiplier is unlocked on those cpu's allowing overclocking without overclocking the base clock. You might be able to find a used cpu for your system and get a huge performance increase.
