I have currently Windows 7 installed on my HP laptop. I'm planning to install Windows 8. I wanted to ask will my laptop's specs would be able to run Windows 8:

Intel Core i3
CPU 2.40GHz (4 CPUs)
2GB RAM
DirectX 11

Graphics:
Intel HD Graphics 3000
Memory: 778 MB
Driver Model: WDDM 1.1

Also, if possible, can I install Windows 8 as an extra OS or completely replace Windows 7 (dual boot)?

The requirements for Windows 8 are almost identical those for Windows 7. If you computer can handle one, it can handle both.

The main issue to look out for is driver compatibility. It may be that some of your hardware (network cards, sound cards etc) doesn't have Windows 8 compatible drivers and therefore won't work. Check on the laptop manufacturers website if they have released any Windows 8 Drivers.

PS.
Here are the requirements copied from Microsoft's website.

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2 (more info)
RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver
