Intel core i5-3570k migration

Hi,

I currently have an amd fx6100 with a hd 6870 (on a 500w psu) , whilst the hd6870 seems to 'pull it's weight' it seems the fx6100 significantly bottleneck my system so I decided to upgrade to the intel core i5 3570 k for a much better gaming experience.

My query is , will I have to upgrade my psu to a higher wattage ? (I probably won't be over-clocking.)
also my current system has 3 fan's ( the default heatsink with fan for processor , obviously the default fan for gpu and a fan that came with the case.) will I need to buy additional cooling systems for the core i5 or can I just use the default heatsink like I did with my old processor.

On a sidenote , can anyone reccomend any cpu temperature reading program ,

and if you arent overclocking why get expensive K version? get non K version and stock heat sinks are fine but why not spend extra 30 dollars for CM Hyper 212 evo? it will cool much better than stock (given it is installed properly)

you can also pair non K i5 with cheaper non overclockable boards....

I'm also guessing I'll need to re-install the os as well , is there a way of de-registering the code with the current version and using it when I re-install/activate it.

Thanks , I think I'll definitely buy a 3rd party heatsink , from what I've heard about the 3570's heatsink it's not great (your comment on getting a non k version is valid but on amazon there is only a £5 difference so might as well cover all area's if I want to oc at a later date )

Is your os OEM or retail version?
If its OEM you will most likely need.to buy new OS
and i recommend Asus z77 Lk board or Asrock z77 extreme 4 board with i5

But before you buy os try calling microsoft and see if they can move it to your new board... And give lame excuses like cpu and mother board is broken..... (lol dunno if im allowed to post this)
Do not say ur upgrading

You need to overclock your FX to at least 4.4Ghz but buy a nice aftermarket cooler. Sell your VGA + money you have saved up for 3570k you could have buy at least 7950 if not 7970...the end result is more FPS than i5 with 6870.

I dont know much about amd cpus but 4.4 sounds like a pretty big number to pull and why get 7950 / 7970 when his not going to need all the performance? He will be able to get better mobo along with awesome cpu that will probably last Long time and buying currently high end gpu whilest using older cpu doesnt make sense to me even it is oced?

cost wise tho he has a point cpu is 190 motherbord another 120ish...

Why get new CPU unless he wants better performance. I bet he wants to play all top games at high and he is going to get the most performance boost by upgrading VGA not CPU.

1, Getting i5 at stock you wont need to do OC and all the troubles along with OCing
2, Recieving better Mobo will generally also grant extra fps (insignificant but still a plus) eg 3.0 pcie express ports for futrue graphic cards
3, OC to 4.4 ghz AND 7970 you would be close to hitting 500w mark on PSU
4, he said he was looking for better cpu not gpu?

My mobo is the asus m5a78l-m I've had no problems before , would buying a new board really offer significant peformance increase?

No as i said very minimal increase but do get a after market cooler and try OCing and see if it helps with bottle necking... if im not mistaken your cpu has 3 physical and 3 virtual cores at 3.3ghz stock clock rate?
Follow overclocking guide which there are alot in this forum... If you do not feel like replacing whole motherboard and cpu because i dont really see how FX 6100 could bottle neck a 6870?

But if you are getting better gpu i would just get a better cpu unless you are prepared for hours of testing and seeing blue screens of death...

PS once.you know what ypur doing woth overclock its pretty fun =) and you MUST get a after market heat sink of you are going to overclock regardless of how much you plan to oc...

You can sell your VGA on ebay or amazon. But for sure don't forget to buy a new CPU cooler at least the one I mentioned before...
