Intel Core i5 6600k @ 4,5 GHz - Temps on Prime95 and gaming-load - is this normal?

Hello community,

recently I've been monitoring the temps for my CPU and GPU, since that's always a good idea after overclocking. Doing that, I have seen some small, but to me illogical differences of temps while testing with Prime95 vs. playing CPU intensive games.

First of all, let me list you my rig:

Tower: A PGS Aerocool, don't really know the exact name of it. It's quite big and airy.
Mainboard: MSI Z170A PRO, Intel Z170 So.1151 (Dual Channel DDR4)
Harddrives: A 500 GB Crucial SSD for games, 1,5 TB basic harddrive.
CPU: Intel Core i5 6600k @ 4,5 GHz OC
GPU: Inno3D GTX 1070 iChill x3 @ 2,0 GHz OC (8 GB VRAM)
CPU Fan: EKL Alpfenföhn Matterhorn White Edition (Great cooler!)
RAM: 1 x 8 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 @ 2400 MHz (planning to get a 2nd one)
Additional Fans: I have 1 fan on the bottom, blowing some air directly onto my GPU and one behind the CPU fan, blowing hot air outside.

Here's a screen of my CPU-Z:

My Vcore in BIOS for overclocking to 4,5 GHz (stable) is 1.340, the highest number I've seen in CPU-Z was 1.336. Intel C-State for power saving is set to AUTO, but the multiplier is dynamic anyways.

Now to my problem/question: I have done a 3 hour stress-test on prime, on which my average temperature for CPU was 59,95 °C. Since the cores all have different temps, I believe the lowest one was at a max of 54 °C and the highest one at about 64 °C.
Those temps are nothing to be worried about, I guess.

But! if I play for example GTA V, my max temp will be about 73 °C at a switching 80-100% CPU load. How is this possible? Shouldn't Prime95 be the absolute CPU stress test showing the highest temps to be reached? All the testing was done on "Small FFTs" mode and the temps were stable at all times.

I hope anyone of you can clear this up, since it doesn't make sense to me. May it be the ambient temperature of my tower, because the GPU gets heated up aswell? The maximum my GPU reaches, would be 60-63 °C on 100% load.

I'm looking forward to your answers. Thanks!

Greetings, Nitrobit45

Update: After retightening the screws of my heavy CPU cooler and removing some dust out of my other fans, my max temps on GTA V will be 58-61 °C. Re-doing Prime in Large FFTs mode brings me to a max of 70 °C, while the average is still around 60-64 °C.

This seems to have just turned around ?? :p

Btw: Turning on "Self Radio" in GTA V will make any CPU about 10 °C warmer than without.

Did it happend again? Cause my cpu i7-6700k max temperature in prime95 is 72C, but in some games my cpu runs around 30% usage and 63 to 65C which I find it kind of weird.. Cause what about when it reaches 70-80% usage in game? The temperature would obviously increase I guess..

Temps seem to be stable at around 58-61 °C now. I even managed to lower my Vcore to 1.30 - 1.31 at 4,5 GHz.

I don't believe your situation is that unusual.

For example, when I play Assassin's Creed Unity, I have about 100% CPU usage all the time (lots of NPCs), but temps are between 50-55 °C.
In GTA V, my usage would be around 80-95% but temps will be about 5 to 6 °C higher than in Assassin's Creed. It seems like CPU usage is not 100% connected with temps... I don't know why.

Yet, having a usage of 30% shouldn't get you near your maximum. Is it 30% all the time or is that just the minimum? Try monitoring your temps to a file while playing (MSI Afterburner, Core Temp) and give some feedback :)
