[SOLVED] Intel Core i5-8250U or Intel Xeon E3-1275 v2

Hi all. I have a ThinkServer TS130 currently used as a daily desktop PC with Win 8.1 Ent. I also have a spare DELL Inspiron 5570 laptop with Win 10 Pro. The TS130 is much older than the DELL except that the TS130 has been brand new in storage until I bought it almost 2 years ago for almost nothing. I was wondering which machine I should keep/spend time on for the next 3 years. I have modest requirements and don't play games or do any intensive video/graphics. I mainly use it for MS Office, internet and watch movies. I did a comparison below but seems to be both have ups/downs so don't know which is worth maintaining. Any help is appreciated.

Unless you NEED a laptop, the performance of a desktop will almost always be better for the same price.

You're welcome. You may even be able to upgrade to the e3-1290 v2, but I have only found that the TS430 is spec'd to run it. While this may be the case, many manufacturers like Lenovo, Dell, and HP don't test all the possibilities, especially when the systems are end of life, and many have found that they can be upgraded far, far past what they were originally meant to do.

Case in point is my HP z420 which was supposed to max out to only 32gb of ecc non-registered ram. Well, apparently you can use registered ecc modules and even LRDIMMs and I have 256GB of ram installed in the system, and it might theoretically be able to go to 512GB using 64GB LRDIMMs. Completely untested by HP, by I had memtest pass over 3x whole passes (38hrs each!) without a hitch. The rewards for experimenting can be quite sweet.

Once I get a better desktop say 2-3 years from now I will use the TS130 as my headless file server. The TS130 is currently running Win8.1 x64 and I am not sure if it can run Win10Pro x64.

Many systems didn't have usb 3.0 when it came out, so no biggie. The TS130 actually is a server, so it should work well as a server. Anything that can run win7 or 8 can usually run 10, but the older OSes generally will be faster as newer OSes are more demanding for no real reason other than 'newer'.

Agreed but the are programs that only run in Win10. I am reasonably happy with Win8.1 but may not have a choice but to upgrade.

Yep that's a different story--then you have no choice. With 16gb you should be okay on ram, but I would beef up that gpu if you can to something more powerful as that will help with all the fancy unnecessary graphics rendering for just basic stuff. You can also shut some of that crap off, which helps.

Hi Samir, TS130 user manual says "Each slot supports 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 UDIMMs with the ECC technology". The Intel Xeon spec says "DDR3 1333/1600". Both agreed max memory is 32GB. So which do you think is correct - max 1333 MHz or 1600 MHz?
