just wondering how these two compare because my laptop said i need a i5 or amd phenom II to run a game and i thought the 17 was just as good or better. but according to my friend it's not

Phenom II X6 1090T 3.2GHz
i7 3610QM 2.3GHz, 3.3GHz Turbo Boost

Well, obviously you are not going to find a laptop with a PII X6 1090T. The i7 3610QM is based on Ivy Bridge so per 1MHz the i7 will provide better performance than the 1090T. Probably not equal to a desktop i7 though since some "performance features" may have been de-tuned to lower power consumption.

Turbo Boost of 3.3GHz only applies if only one core stressed. If more than 1 core is stressed then the max Turbo Boost speed is decreased. How high does Turbo Boost go if 2 / 4 cores are being used? Don't know... I would guess that the lowest Turbo Boost speed will be around 2.7GHz if all 4 cores were stressed.

Given the above, the i7-3610QM would be at least equal to the PII X6 1090T in overall performance. For programs that use only 1 or 2 cores the i7 should provide better performance because it will be able to attain higher Turbo Boost speeds.

Of course when gaming is concerned, the graphic card is really important too. Especially for games that do not care how fast the CPU is as long as it does not bottleneck the graphics card. Laptop graphics do not compare to desktop graphics. A mobile GTX 670m is just a little slower than a desktop Radeon HD 6870. However, a desktop GTX 670 would destroy a desktop Radeon HD 6870.

Not even close, it performs about a 7850 amd card, the 660 gtx is better than the 680m mobile card, just because it has the same cuda cores has a 670 gtx desktop, doesn't mean it performs about the same.
And comparing cpu and gpu desktop vs mobile is a nonsense.

But you don't even state that originally..where's your logic?

well it's an Nividia GTX660m

which ive also heard isn't too great. i use system requirements lab and it says a gtx480 is better. i'm sorry i don't really know much about my computer hardware

It's all about how much performance you want and how much you want to spend for it. If you want to play games @ 1080p resolution with high graphic settings, then I would say you should look at a laptop with a GTX 675MX or better.

If you read through the entire thread, there are a lot of posters who do not believe in that original poster's overclock. There is also no real proof other than screenshots which can be doctored. Add in the fact that the original poster stated he is using a custom VBIOS, but does not reveal anything about it.

If the custom VBIOS was released, then at least the claims could be tested for. Otherwise, you can either decide to believe the poster, or think he is simply lying.
