Price is also a con on DDR4 if you were to go with that platform.

I went with the cheapest motherboards for each i7, the cheapest 4x4GB kit of DDR3 and the fastest 4x4GB kit of DDR4. It seems to me like the biggest con is the price of the 4930k

4930K is on X79 platform which is now dead since X99 came out.

5820K is on X99 but it requires DDR4 which is a bit expensive.

Either one is good for gaming, video editing/rendering, photoshop, etc.

Meanwhile nobody has mentioned the only real tradeoffs with each choice.

I7 5820k pros: m.2/sata e motherboard support.
I7 5820k cons: very high ram price, you'll be paying a premium for 32/64gb of ram, only 28 pcie lanes, no 4way sli support, expensive motherboards

I7 4930k pros: I7 5820k cons
I7 4930k cons: I7 5820k pros.

Yeah that's also what I was thinking, the X99 build will be easier to upgrade.

e.g. Gigabyte GA-X99-UD3 has 4way SLI support
