Intel Core i7 870 to i3570k worth it?

In the new year I'm going to be upgrading my PC and was curious to know whether or not it is worth getting the 3570k from my i7 870?

Could you give specifics about your current set up please? Because it may not be the right time for a new build for you. If you give information we can discuss further and i'll explain why i think so

Its an old Dell XPS 8000 which I got around 3-4 years ago on sale and it cant run most games anymore unless I turn the settings down.

Motherboard - (X231R) Chipset: Intel P55 Socket: LGA1156
GPU - GeForce GTS 240
CPU - i7 870
PSU - 350W

yeah, some really low end components here, worked well as a video editing/rendering PC, just no good for gaming.

Sorry that I'm being vague on what components are inside, I'm not entirely sure myself what the exact models are.

If you need more than this I could try to find out for you.

How far into the new year? Haswell will come out between Mar and Jun of '13. I'd wait if you are in that range.

Dunno if it's that much better directly against the 870 but you'll be doing a GPU/CPU/mobo/PSU upgrade so I do think the system as a whole will feel noticably faster.

Could just get a larger PSU, good GPU, and an SSD and see if that meets your need. If it doesn't, you can port those parts into the 3570K build. That make sense?

I have the Intel® Core™ i7-860 on my home system and work with an Intel Core i5-3570K here at the office. While the Intel Core i5-3570K (especially when overclocked) is faster it isnt so much faster that I would move from my Intel Core i7-860 at home. Maybe next year I will upgrade but not right now.

1 - I'd suggest not building a new system by now. Haswell is on the way, if you'd like to build new, it is best to wait for it. Because as far as i know that CPU will be on a different socket. So if you upgrade/build now, there is a chance that you may regret that you didn't wait for it.

2- i7 870 is still a capable CPU and your chipset/mobo also same. You have pci express 2.0 on LGA 1156, upgrading the GPU would be reasonable and wisest choice i'd make

3- If you do a GPU upgrade you will probably need a new Power Supply Unit (PSU). There are many quality brands/makes in the market for cheap. You must know beforehand how much power your new GPU will require and choose the PSU according to that.

4- Upgrade RAM as needed (4 to 8gb recommended for gaming)

It is still your choice to upgrade parts or build new. But any person with half computer/technology market knowledge will advise you to keep your current system and do part-upgrades instead of building new, at this time.

1) CPU: Thank you for you advice, I also just realized that Haswell will be the Tock of the Intel's Tick-Tock. So I'm definitely going to wait out for that.

2) PSU: For the power supply, I'm not going to bother getting anything fancy just yet. Not say that I'm not going to buy something of a good quality.

4) R.A.M: Forgot to mention, I currently have 8GB, so I'll leave that for now.

5) GPU: As for the GPU I'm thinking of getting the MSI GTX 670 Power Edition OC as its had great reviews and mostly comes up good on benchmarks.
(Unless you strongly recommend anything else)

No even if you got a new cpu your fps wouldnt improve your gpu is too weak. atleast get a 7850 or a gtx 660. i currently have a core i7 930 overclocked to 3.8ghz it smashes everything i give it. i play battlefield 3 borderlands 2 arma 2 etc. Just overclock your i7 870 to atleast around 3.5ghz+ and your fine.

A 500w PSU would have no issues but i'd recommend a 550w just in case. Because you are getting a slightly overclocked GPU and you may also want to overclock your CPU. If you won't be overclocking, a 500w can be good.

*One thing though, if you want to overclock your CPU:

You may be at the safer side by getting an after market cooler. That way you can push your CPU to some higher speeds and get more juice out of it until Haswell comes and then think about building new. BUT IF YOU DON'T WANT TO TAKE THE RISK TO DAMAGE YOUR CPU, DO NOT OVERCLOCK AT ALL! Because overclocking can increase your i7 870 temperatures and make it become unstable/damaged. You are warned. But on the otherhand, i see a lot of people easily hitting 3.5+ Ghz on their 870s, 7/24 with no issues whatsoever. So it is your decision to OC or not.

GPU: A GTX 670 is a beast in gaming, though i don't know if your CPU can give enough horse power for that GPU. Most people would recommend 1 of these GPUs to you: HD 7870 Ghz, GTX 660 or a GTX 660Ti. Although i personally think that GTX 660Ti DOES NOT deserve its money. I'd pick a HD 7950 over a GTX660Ti any day. But this is me... Also i say again, i am not sure if a GTX 670 is the most suitable card for your set up. I'd pick a cheaper and decently performing card for that set up simply because you have a probability to build a new rig in the next year (with haswell). You could shed your hardly earned money for a more expensive/newer generation card in your haswell system. Especially in a couple of months AMD and/or Nvidia will unleash their new generation of GPUs. The choice is always yours to make. At the same time you can get a GTX 670 now and transfer it to your new Haswell next year. Can be logical and depends on what you plan to do.

*I forgot to ask what resolution do you use at your Monitor?

If i may suggest a better GPU for that resolution, in price range, it would be HD 7870. Those PSUs are all good IMO any of those will do.

i'd wait couple months for haswell since it's no use to upgrade to a dead cpu socket now. from rumors it will decimate ivy bridge and sandy bridge as soon the old i7s still awesome cpus will be throw backs in retro pc
