Question Intel F-CPUs on MB

Hello,

A newbie builder question. If I have a MB with HDMI ports and an Intel Core i5 12400F. My understanding is that the use of the MB ports requires a CPU with integrated graphics. Since the Intel 12400F is not I will need to use a discrete GPU. How will this work? Obviously, I have to use the HDMI ports on the GPU. But, if the MB BIOS is configured to use integrated graphics, how can I switch the BIOS to PCIe graphics. Seems like a chicken and egg problem. My hopes are that the BIOS will auto-switch the video output to PCIe? I would like to know if this is the case before purchasing a GPU. And, for y'alls amusement, I tried to figure out why I don't see any BIOS post until I figured out that the "F" CPUs have no integrated video.....This took a while and me purchasing another MB and proc thinking one or the other were fried :)

Motherboards I have available are ASRock B660M-HDV and Gigabyte H610M.

Thank you for any help!

O

If you have a CPU with NO integrated graphics, you will need a dedicated GPU.
Your monitor connects to one of the ports on the GPU, not the motherboard.

If you DO have a CPU with an integrated GPU subsystem, and NO dedicated GPU, you connect your monitor to the applicable port on the motherboard.

Yes, which is what I described above. My question is:

If the MB BIOS routes video though internal graphics/CPU pipeline by default and I have an F CPU, how can I change the BIOS to use PCIe graphics output? Or, does the BIOS auto-recognize that there is no native graphics capability on the CPU and then automatically enables PCIe graphics?

Thanks,

Using a dedicated GPU will almost always deactivate the iGPU function of the CPU and the motherboard ports.

auto-recognize

With an F suffix processor, you will have no integrated graphics function at all. Were you to connect a monitor to the back i/o of the motherboard, it would do nothing. The motherboard bios will at power on time look for and use the first adapter it finds.
If you had both a non F suffix processor, and a discrete graphics card, you would have two graphics adapters and could connect monitors to any or both of them.

And, not many know, but the integrated adapter also includes a capability called quick sync.
