This was a NOS board i had lying around unopened for years.I decided to use it to upgrade an old G31 build I had.Installed fine but noticed high temps on north and southbridge. One cause that came to mind was that board had never been used for years and thermal compound had perished. So the question is, does the spring clip solely attach the heatsink or would there be problems with removal?I am going to upgrade cpu cooler so i though i would re-thermal north and southbridge as well.

Hi, I also had couple years ago... an Intel G31/sc775 mini ATX board. And I also removed that alloy heat sink to replace the paste. There is some strange type of it, hard to remove but went all off with nitrogen based glue remover (sorry, I dont know the proper English words). Moreover, I found an old 50 mm fan that I attached to the SB heat sink, set to silently blow in low rpm. The temps dropped from about 65C to 37-40C. Go ahead, no fear!

Be careful, the spring is one thing and the old heat-hardened and dryed out paste is the other! Moreover, There can be a doublesided sticker around between the chip and the sink.

OK thanks to both of you and I will report back with what results i achieve in the near future. In the meantime took
GeorgettaCZ comments on board and stuck, temporarily, a 40mm fan on SB and that alone brought the overall temps down about 15C so hopefully all temps will come down to acceptable/low levels when all is done
