Intel Haswell E3-1230v3 DMI vs Desktop processors DMI2

I have been looking into getting a Intel Haswell E3-1230v3 because of its similar specs to i7 4770k but at much lower price. I have been trying to do some research to find any pitfalls of this option. One that I am curious about is the fact that on intels website when comparing multiple desktop processors like the i5 4770k with the xeon, the i7 has a DMI2 bus type while the xeon has a DMI bus type. What effect will this have on performance. What is the difference between DMI and DMI2? Right beneath the bus type, intel displayse the bus speed, and both the xeon and the i7 have a bus speed of 5 Gt/s. Even though xeon is on DMI and i7 is on DMI2, so did intel somehow make up for it because theyre the same speed. I know I am rambling now, but I am really curious about this and I'm not finding too much about this online. Please help!

Depends on what you're going to do with it. For gaming and most general usage a Xeon, let alone an i7, will be going to waste as you won't be using the processor to its' full potential. The other limiting factor, and very frustrating one at that is that Xeons require ECC RAM and use slower RAM speeds. You can't use DDR-3 1866 or above, you're stuck with DDR3 1333.

I think the main difference is the lack of onboard graphics .

Probably made as a 4770 , but binned as a xeon because the graphics cores were faulty . You will lose some of the functions supported by the graphics processors . Quick sync video processing etc , but that might not be any issue if you use an external card anyway .

Not sure if they are unlocked

Check your motherboards cpu compatibility list

The Xeon is supported , but the Z87 chipset does not support ECC RAM

I think that must mean the XEON can make use of ECC RAM if its in a motherboard with a suitable chipset

But runs fine with regular RAM ????

I dont know for sure though

E3-1230v3 supports both regular and ECC.

Even Pentium (G3220) supports ECC RAM

No oc though. Not even like E3 1230v2. This is locked. But its great for a no-overclockable gaming build for BF4.

I appreciate the responses, but most of the answers have primarily addressed the difference between a xeon and i7, I am more specifically looking for the difference between DMI and DMI2 and what bus speed means?
