Intel HD 2000 with GTX 275

Before i upgrade, i would like to find out if my i5-2400's Intel HD 2000 work together with my gtx 275? Im just curious how it works.
Is it like onboard graphics on your mobo? when you remove your discrete GPU then the onboard will kick in? or do they actually work hand in hand? taking turns on which task is more suitable for each's capabilities?

works like onboard graphics.

will be switched off when you have discrete gpu installed

Once you use a discrete video card, the Intel graphics core will turn itself off.
