Intel HD being used over dedicated GPU

Hello, I have recently gotten a new laptop and I am already running into problems with it. Just to give a little info: it is using a Nvidia ion GPU. I try to do some light gaming (nothing the nvidia ion should not be able to handle) and no matter what I do, it will not use the graphics card for anything. I have already set the preferred graphics processor to the "High Performance NVIDIA processor and even set all my games to run with it in NVIDIA control panel. I have even searched the entirety of the BIOS and there is no setting to either activate the GPU or deactivate Intel HD. Plus I have And no, the GPU is not just slow. I have a friend with the same laptop that has the GPU activated and gets 40-60 FPS in Minecraft. Mine gets 10 so, the GPU does not just suck.
Can anyone help please? It would be very appreciated.

Control Panel > Hardware/Device Manager > Display Adapters > right click Intel HD Graphics and Disable

Works in many cases. Sounds like yours is a broad situation where nothing seems to work. Otherwise it could be a poorly patched game.

If this doesn't work, make sure you're updated to the latest non beta drivers for bother your dedicated and integrated graphics.

This ended up disabling the monitor. I hooked it up to my TV and was able to turn it back on. Strange enough, I tried playing some Minecraft and saw some serious framerate changes. But I don't want to be stuck playing on only my TV screen. Any other way?

I mean if the tv is 720p as opposed to a 1080p monitor, that'd make sense.

Sounds like something might be up with the chip as when the integrated graphics are disabled, the laptop should default to the dedicated, and vice versa

The TV is actually 1440p as opposed to the 1080p monitor. And it was using the Nvidia ion when I played it with the Intel HD disabled

This applies to laptops with Nvidia Optimus (Dedicated graphics and onboard graphics)
Laptops (with Optimus) MUST have the dedicated GPU AND onboard GPU enabled. Do not disable your Intel GPU.
Nvidia Optimus is there to switch from integrated graphics (saves power) to dedicated graphics when it needs to.
If you uninstall/disable your integrated graphics it'll change from "Intel HD xxxx" to "Microsoft Basic VGA Adapter" and more than likely turn your monitor off.

Just go into your Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Global Settings > Select to use High Performance Processor
If you tried that and it doesn't work, set the individual program (ie. Minecraft) to launch with it in the programs list (directly beside "Global Settings")

This will force games to launch using the Nvidia GPU

You'll need to start looking for individual fixes then.
Here's one to get Minecraft running.

NVIDIA control panel > Add this to the programs list > C:\Program Files (x86)\Minecraft\runtime\jre-x64\1.8.0_25\bin\javaw > Set to use high performance processor

That should get Minecraft using the dedicated GPU.

That file does not exsist. I did set Javaw.exe and all Java exe files to run with high performance nvidia processor and it still did squat.

I did this, there were only two drivers on the list Intel(R) HD Graphics 5500 and NVIDIA GeGeforce GTX 950M after disabling the intel one it then switched me to using Microsoft Basic Display Driver. It just doesn't want me to use the NVIDIA driver. Both drivers are up to date

After a lot of research, trial and error, I've found what Joshua Martin has said to be 100% correct. I've just dealt with the issue at the program level.

Thank you for confirming that. I have had this problem for so long that it's amazing to see Minecraft say I have a NVIDIA Card.
