Hi,
would Intel HD Graphics 520 be sufficient for light HD video editing in Cyberlink PowerDirector or Sony Movie Studio?

My two options are:
1) Laptop with Core i7-6500U and Intel HD Graphics 520
2) Laptop with AMD FX-8800P and Radeon R8 M350DX (2GB)

Thanks for your guidance.
D

Go with the intel option.
Cyberlink's PowerDirector works very well with Skylake generation of Intel CPU like that one. In fact the included GPU in that generation of intel CPU is one of the two choices of hardware that allows GPU acceleration even while encoding H265/HEVC videos at main/8 bit setting (the only other better option would be a Maxwell 2 generation nVidia card, that allows even more options - 10 bit and VP9).
Of course H264 acceleration is supported as well - HD 520 supports up to 4K video editing with hardware acceleration.

PS: The other video editing software that you mention doesn't make use of the embedded hardware encoding block, so it will not work as good.

Thanks for your message SoNic67!

Yea, I thought that Cyberlink PD might work well (it mentioned about Hyper Threading, plus I noticed that Intel use Cyberlink when demo'ing their HD graphics on their website).

Will be using the i7-6500U on my laptop as you say... with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD.

I was planning on outputting (is that the correct term? I'm a novice at video editing) the videos in MPEG-4 format for uploading to YouTube... I hope that is a good choice? And that the Intel HD graphics 520 can handle that.

Thanks again, D

Yes, MP4 is a container only, the internal format in that container should be h264 to benefit from the hardware acceleration.

However, note that both of the above software have licensing terms that ban use of mpeg2 or mpeg4 formats for commercial work (license for home user only). I am not a lawyer so I am not sure if monetizing your youtube channel counts as commercial work.
