I have bought a new motherboard, since my old one had many incompatibilities, and I want to remove my i5 Ivy Bridge processor from my old motherboard and place it in my new one. Can I do the same thing with the heatsink, and install it on my new motherboard, or will it not work anymore since I have removed it from the CPU, and all the thermal paste has already been spread? Or do I have to remove the thermal paste from my CPU and buy a new CPU cooler?

Solution
No, cleaning it with alcohol will not damage it.

The old thermal interface material needs to removed before you can reinstall the heatsink. As soon as the heatsink and the CPU heat spreader are cleaned and a rice sized amount of paste added to the top of the CPU heat spreader then you are good to replace your existing heatsink. Just set it on, wiggle it side to side a little bit and do up the retainers.

Rubbing alcohol is the easiest, use it completely clean the CPU as well as the bottom of the heatsink, and make sure you reapply some new thermal compound when you reinstall your CPU in to your new mobo.

cleaning of the cpu and cooler is needed

isopropyl alcohol 99 percent and cotton buds and plastic throw away cup clean it well with cotton buds and iso alcohol
use coffee filters or anti static cloth to dry off

you will need also new thermal paste mx4

pea size ammount in the middle of cpu spread evenly with a plastc gift card ( no credit cards or anything that is plated)

now put your cooler and then go round with cotton bud to remove any excess squeezed out of your cooler at the sides this makes a seal then plug in fan and away you go

note mx4 paste is better then stock paste so you will see a drop in cpu temps by probly 5c compared to last time

So use isopropyl alcohol 99 percent on the bottom of heatsink as well to remove previous thermal compound? Will that damage the heatsink and make it not usable anymore?
