Intel i5 2500K + Hyper 212 Evo suspicious temps

Hello everybody, almost half a year ago i bought the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU cooler to get rid of the stock cooler which made a wierd noise. This was my first attempt to ever install a CPU cooler myself, so i followed a guide how to install this cooler. And after an hour or so of struggle i finally mounted it.

For some months i have not even given a single thought to how hot my computer even runs now so i decided to get hwmonitor and check the temps on my CPU.

I'm running @ 3.3GHz (stock) becasue i'm not familiar with overclocking.
Well, to the issue now:

My ambient temperature is around 20
CPU when i'm on desktop doing nothing is between 40c - 50c
Core #1 for an example can show 40c while Core #2 shows 47c. Also the temps goes from 40 to 50 and back again sometimes in a matter of a few seconds.

Have i done something wrong? Should i do something about it or is it completely normal?

The temps are warm, try stress testing the CPU with Prime95, with 20 ambient, temps shouldn't go past 70C normally. CPU idle temp fluctuation is normal. But 40C temps with 20C ambient is indeed a bit suspecious. Have you applied a pea sized amount of thermal compound and spread it evenly?

Hi, those idle temperatures are on the high side. It might be that you applied a little too much thermal compound or didn't use one of the better brands. It only requires a pea sided drop on the top of the cpu to get the job done right. Get yourself some pure rubbing alcohol carefully clean the old compound of and reapply. I use the Arctic MX4 because it's non-conductive .

It was my very first time mounting an aftermarket cooler. And yes i used applied a pea sized amount of paste, but maybe i didn't spread it enough? i saw a few videos about it and people said that it didnt have to cover all the CPU so i didnt spread it all over the CPU.

Perhaps that is the problem?

Yep that's the issue, you need to spread it evenly all over the surface of the chip for effective thermal conductivity.

The 212evo needs paste applied differently.
The bottom of the cooler where it contacts the cpu has grooves between the heatpipes.
If you applied a small pea size then you did not get full coverage. Most of the paste is in the first couple grooves.

The best method for the 212evo is to fill the groves with paste. then apply 2 thin lines of paste on the cpu in the same direction as the heatpipe grooves run.

Because of the grooves the normal spreading method will cause air pockets in the groove areas, which is bad.

I've always applied in the center and let pressure do the rest.

It's nice to see different method to apply the thermal paste. The 2 lined one seems most efficient on that type of surface.

I re-applied the thermal paste along with cleaning my computer components.

Now it idles at 30C to 35C and i ran a prime95 test on 20 - 25 minutes (Don't know if it's enough) and had a 30 minute long gaming session in BF4 on highest settings on a pretty crowded server with a detailed map.

Prime95 temps: maxed at 60C
BF4: maxed at 55C

So it all sorted out after all, thanks again for all the answers everybody!
