I was downloading a game on Origin, and when checking the temp on my CPU and it had reached 80 and dropped immideatly when I stopped the download. Is this behaviour normal?

Solution
As long as the paste did not dry out before you put the heatsink back on, you should be fine. And as long as the heatsink and fan are secure, your worries should be over. Most CPU coolers have four lock nuts on them. Some just have regular screws. And I have even seen some very annoying ones that have "pop-in" pins, usually cheap plastic at that. Again, as long as everything is secure now, you should be fine. It is not a good idea to remove the heatsink once you apply the thermal paste. This can allow for debris to get in the mix, and once it dries, it will no longer provide adequate transfer of heat from the CPU to the cooler if you have separated it. Again, if you did so while it was fresh, and still moist, you should have nothing to...

I think my temp was around 70c when I played a game before.

That is 176 degrees Fahrenheit. Pretty hot, especially for something like downloading files. It is still within the threshold, but that sends up a red flag in my mind. My first thought would be to check the cooling system. A can of air to clean out dust, check bearings on fans, they should spin freely and smoothly, and see if the CPU cooler may have come loose. If you are not familiar with any of these procedures, do research first. Look up a video or two to see what others check for and how. It may be something as simple as dust bunnies clogging the air flow. I hope that is all it is.

Well, before all this I did clean my computer off dust thouroghly. Especially the CPU fan unit which I did remove and put back on again, I'm sure it's on properly though. Before the cleaning it was pretty clogged with dust in the heat sink (not sure if it's called that but what's below the fan). It sits at around 40c on idle.

1) What program did you use to check temperature?
(I use "Core Temp" and my Asus motherboard software to confirm)

*In Core Temp use the highest "Max" value for one of the cores for IDLE, gaming, or worst-case scenarios like Prime95. You can click "File->Refresh" to reset the values.

2) Are you sure the Thermal Paste was reapplied correctly?
(i.e. 5mm pea-sized ball, or spread as thin as possible)

3) What COOLER do you have?

4) Is the CPU overclocked?

Other:
Seeing an 80degC result for a simple CPU task suggest a few possibilities:
1) incorrect temperature reading
2) bad thermal paste application
3) bad cooler (i.e. pump for liquid cooler)
4) improper fan setting (not spinning up under load)
5) CPU was actually doing other intensive tasks besides downloading

The fact that it's 40degC or so in idle makes me think the thermal paste isn't too bad.

Well, I immideatly noticed my faults. I didn't apply thermal paste because I do not have any. Sorry for this. I should order some and apply it. A question though. Should I clean the old paste off the CPU and the part that touches the CPU?

You should clean the thermal paste, from the CPU and heatsink.
Arctic Silver 5 and IC Diamond are among the best.

Yep.
Lots of tips online, but here's a quick overview:

1) Clean with 90% isopropyl alcohol or similar
2) 5mm pea-sized thermal paste (I do NOT use the spread method. The pea method works for over 100 builds and I always test temperature)
3) setup fan control software, and test under Prime95 or other demanding tasks

*Use motherboard fan control software if it exists. On my Z77 Asus board I had to use the Windows 7 fan software as nothing existed for W8/W10 from Asus. The W7 fan control software works great though. You may have similar issues. Go to the motherboard support site for your exact model. Fan software may be in a larger program.

Until I get some. Is it safe to use the PC normally or should I not do anything that is at all CPU demanding?

The CPU will throttle down if it gets too hot, however you can damage your CPU even so. This is why Intel has a recommended spec for continued usage in the 70's C range and a throttle temp around 100degC.

Will it work? Yes.
Will it shut down safely? Yes. Likely.
Will you damage the CPU? Possibly.

Even if I use it for web browsing and video streaming?

Should I remove the CPU out of it's socket before applying the remover?

Yes. Very carefully remove it before cleaning it. Also, be aware of the dangers of electrostatic discharge. You can easily fry your CPU if you are not careful. The side with the old thermal paste on it should be the only side that needs cleaned, however do not be afraid to visually inspect all sides for debris. And once you clean it you will have even less heat dissipation than before. Meaning the old thermal paste, while ineffective, is still better than no thermal paste at all. Your best bet is to not use the computer until you get replacement thermal paste. Also, paper coffee filters make for great cleaning wipes with the isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. Admittedly, I use paper towels at work. Make sure the thermal paste is removed from the heatsink as well using the same methods as with the CPU.

The CPU can be stressed at any time due to anti-virus or other scans, and web browsing is a lot more intensive than a simple download through Origin.

I said it MAY be okay. It probably will be. I personally wouldn't risk it.

Electronic chips are funny things. They might work for twenty years or more, or may die suddenly due to a weak spot that overheated. There are millions of little transistors in there that slowly degrade over time. More heat accelerates the degradation and weak spots can be significantly affected.

It's likely a LOW estimate that it would fail, but it's not zero.

Wouldn't the remover seep below the CPU though? I thought you had to apply the remover then let it sit for a few minutes. Also would coffee filters work as a good cloth for removing the paste?

I cleaned it, put on the paste and booted the computer. Should I have waited before booting the PC? I used Cooler Master HTK-002 Thermal Compound. Anyways, temp is now in the 50c when downloading, so I think the issue is solved.

Origin has a bug, if you start downloading something it will use as many CPU as it can to process the downloaded data, also I can see your antivirus is taking a huge amount of CPU. Were it running a scan?
More CPU usage = More heat

Nah, it definitley was the thermal paste. Noticed an immideate change after I applied it. Still need to test on games though to make sure but preliminary tests check out.

The temprature was lower when I downloaded now.

After I applied the paste I did lift the fan off the CPU a couple of times to check. Is it necessary to apply it again or am I fine? The CPU is not overclocked.
