I am trying to find any information that compares the two processors above for video editing. I don't play games at all on my PC, it will purely be a video editing machine.

I am looking at a Desktop with the AMD FX4130 and a laptop with an i5-4200M processor. Both have 8GB of RAM. The desktop has an Nvidia 2Gb GT card and the laptop has Intel HD Graphics 4600 integrated.

If it makes a difference the software I use is Magix Movie Edit Pro.

Thanks :)

I would go with the AMD desktop for a few reasons and the first is heat. When you are rendering and exporting videos it will run all your cores at 100% and this would not be good for a laptop with moderate cooling. Also The FX4130 and 4350 and 6350 are all pretty close in price so you have options although the FX architecture is a little slower clock for clock to Intel Sandy Bridge processors. But you can overclock these CPU's quite well as long as you have adequate cooling ie high performance liquid cooling or a Noctua NDH14 or NH-U14S. I am sure you can think of many reasons to have a desktop for video editing. And one final thought If you are using Adobe CS6 software you can use a GeForce GTX GPU and use Cuda to give more performance in those programs.

Oh the i5 would do well for editing. I imagine if you were to pit them against eachother the i5 would do fairly well. Video edting applications will make good use of hyperthreading. And I sometimes forget that Intel mobile CPU's can handle a bit more heat then desktop CPU's. Also I really do not know the spcefics of the i5 4200m but I am quite sure it would score better in synthetic benchmarks than the FX 4130. But all the same it would be more optimal to go for the desktop unless you must work away from home more than not. I hope this could help.

Thanks again. It seems an unusual question to compare a desktop to a mobile processor, as the manufacturers use the same code (e.g. Intel i5) for them both. Desktop processors use so much more electrical power I can only think it is because they are more powerful, else why wouldn't desktop manufacturers use the mobile chips!

I've now confused myself even more by reading this lol:

Hi, if you can avoid purchasing the FX-4130, It's nowhere near as good as an FX-6300 or FX-4300(The 6300 is similar price to the fx-4300, i'm talking $5)

Where are you from and where do you want to purchase this machine from and most importantly price.

Desktop chips aren't used used in mobile chips because you couldn't fit the cooler in a laptop, imagine a laptop with a CPU cooler in the bottom.

Hi AshyCFC. I am from the UK, and have around £500 to spend (around $800 but you get more bang for your buck in the the US I think). I also need a monitor and keyboard if I go the desktop route.

I don't mind where I purchase it from, and have been looking at local computer stores and of course eBay. I don't play games on PC, it will purely be a photo and video editing machine. It won't be on 24/7 so I am not too concerned about power consumption. Thanks for your help :)

Thanks AshyCFC, much appreciated!!

I'm not sure on the exact card model to be honest, the seller hasn't specified.I didn't think the GPU was as important if I wasn't going to play games though :??:

Curiously you'd get much better value for money if you made the PC yourself(and longer warranty). It can be a daunting task but there is a ton of guides on youtube and on toms. I'd go down that route if I'm honest.

I'd be happy to produce a build for you that'll blitz the vibox one.

Just remember Some Video Editing programs ie: Adobe Premier Pro CS6 will use the CUDA core on an Nvidia GPU. so The more CUDA cores the better performance you will have for editing. I use a GTX 770 that has 1536 CUDA cores. But you probably don't need that many. And workstation Graphics cards are so expensive and really would not make sense if you are on a Budget.

Wow thanks AshyCFC. I am happy to have a go at building one myself if you think it will give me greater value :) I was looking at this i7 4770-based one on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141122892287. I see you shop like my Missus.. hear the budget and add 10% 😉

Vitric, I have read about the GPU being used by some programmes. I am using Movie Edit Pro 2013 but the support sections seem vague and are a bit 'your results may vary'.

Haha 😉 to be honest that was just the best I could find for that money.

That 4770 build has a very basic mobo(perfectly fine)
The only issue is that it has NO graphics card(only integrated)
and the PSU may be a cheap one(often PSU is cheaped out on prebuilt units)

Here's a build £507 with monitor + all top quality parts. The HD 7770 is also vastly superior to all of the video cards being looked at earlier.

I read that 4GB RAM is recommended for this program and a HD 6670.

If the 6670 and 7770 were cars, The 6670 would be a ford fiesta and the 7770 a BMW M3.

When it comes to video editing, you also have to factor in Intel Quick Sync, which also improves performance in that area.
Intel CPU's have been far superior to AMD since Quick Sync was developed.

Sure, Intel CPU's are better and costlier.

Intel Alternative with vastly weaker video card but stronger than the 6670 and gt 630

The 4770 has no graphics card > This is important.

The 4770 has no monitor > This is also important.

If you meant only I3 compared to the quad core AMD, the i3 is faster than the 750K even with only dual cores and has better upgrade path.

Sorry mate. Wasn't having a go. Looks like you've found me two good systems there! If it was your money what would you do?

the ! seemed very sarcastic 😛

I'd go for the i3, got a very solid upgrade path into i5's/i7's whereas the 750k can only go into the APU's which aren't much more use to you.

If you want to spend about £100 more you can get a top end i5 or £50 for the lower end i5

This i5 is streets ahead of the laptop i5 and the fx-4130.

desktop FX 4100 would be my choice too because laptops are just weaker. period. The desktop will be better and i think laptop i5's are dual core not quad core like a desktop i5 processor..

Yeah. Sorry again for that. Must re read my posts before pushing answer. I can probably stretch to the extra cost for a good system. Is there anything else I need like thermal paste etc for the processor or weird tools?
