Intel i5-4590 to i7-4770 question

Doing a bit of research, I came to the conclusion that they both have the same socket.

Considering I have the i5-4590, could it be possible to replace it with the i7-4770 without making any changes to the motherboard? (ex: getting a new one)

(I'm new to computer stuff 😛)

And is it even worth it upgrading, spending almost extra $400 to get some more performance?

Yes you can. Or you can use a Xeon E3 1230v2 - cheaper and same cpu power, but no onboard graphics.

For gaming though, you really only need the i5.
