Is it worth it to get a i7 4790k over its smaller brother the i5 4690k just for gaming i wont be editing videos just gaming and browsing ?

Solution
No, get the 4690k. I made the same decision when I got my 3570k vs the 3770k - The only feature that you're missing is hyper threading. Most games wont use this heavily. At most, you'll suffer a 2-3 fps loss. IMO, 2-3 FPS isn't worth the extra $$$.
The i5 is all you need and you dont even need the overclock version. If you are buying offline buy the exon e3 1231. It is just like the i7 4790 but the price of the i5 4690

I went i5 and it does a good job ,but I also now sit here and wonder ''what if'' and now think I should of just went with the xeon or i7 [I don't care about oc'ing anymore so a xeon would do me just fine ]

so if I could go back I feel I would of went with the hyper threading capable chips over the i5 [opinion]

The only true gaming benefit the i7-4790k has over the i5-4690k is the base clock speed. A few games utilize HT, but not much to warrant a purchase in your situation, especially when the i5 can be overclocked to 4.5 GHz. So just get the i5-4690k, a decent motherboard with a sufficient power phase design, a nice CPU cooler, and overclock it to match the i7's performance in gaming.

seeing you can go i7 when its all said and done go with the better chip .. don't sit around down the road with a regret as I did .. I should of invested in the xeon or i7 right off the bat and not be fooled by whats said here ..

like I said I do see where the i5 can be lacking after a year of use ... I'm sure at somr point you will do more then game on that rig . then you will see where I'm coming from on this

so now I feel I need to buy twice when I should of bought the better once and saved that upgrade money today

good luck

I am also currently deciding between i5 4690K and i7 4790K. The Skylake seems out of question as it doesn't show too much improvement and will not justify the premium. As all I am going to do is Game on my rig with single GTX 970 at 1080p, I decided to go with i5 4690K. However, what confused me is that new games like Batman Arkham Knight and Witcher 3 are recommending i7 instead of i5. Any pointers?

You really shouldn't piggyback on older threads. The mods prefer that each person asks their question, even if it is one that has been asked a 100 times, on a new thread. :)

The difference between an i7 and an i5 is multi-threading. Meaning that the i7 can do more concurrent work than the i5. Meaning that the game developers have solved the issue of concurrency in-game. Which is pretty hard to do well.

I'm suspicious, since this place the minimum and maximum requirements very close to one another, with not much room to maneuver between them. Frankly, I suspect that an i5 will be sufficient.

More interesting is the low requirements setting for graphics. the recommended (high-end) GPU is a GTX 770?? WTF? http://www.geforce.com/games-applications/pc-games/the-witcher-3-wild-hunt/system-requirements
