last weekend i've bought a new setup with an intel i5-6400 cpu on it and since the beginning the temperatures of the cpu are bothering me.
on idle the cpu runs at 52°C and sometimes it peaks till 80°C.(measured with HWmonitor and Speccy)
when running any program or any game, the temp imediatly increases till 95°C- 100°C.
could it be possible that the thermal paste was badly applied in the store?
or is the stock cooler not good enough and should i consider buying an aftermarket cooler?

The stock cooler is more than enough, while gaming they generally bring it to around 70c, and on idle should be around 30-40 in most cases, depending on the ambient temperature it could be lower/higher.

I would recommend purchasing some thermal paste and reapplying it with the cooler. You can just simply wipe the paste off of the cpu and the base of the cooler and put a small pea-sized/rice sized drop of thermal paste, and then attatch the cooler again, going in a clockward motion gently tighten one screw a bit at a time to spread the paste effectively.

You could also purchase a basic aftermarket cooler if you would want cooler than 70c~

Thx for the advice that's what i thought asswell. I'll change the paste this evening and let you know how it worked out.

Problem solved. The cpu fan wasn't mounted properly an there was way to much cooling paste on it. Reapplied cooling paste and mounted it the way it should and now it runs on 28° idle and 50- 60 when gaming.
Never buying anything in that store again, if they cant even mount a cpu fan properly xD
