Intel i5 6600k dead out of box?

First time post, first build ever. Put my build together and couldn't get any video to display on my monitor. I'm using a msi z170a m3 mother board and it indicated with the troubleshooting leds that it was seeing a cpu failure. I was just wondering has anyone else had this kind of issue? I took the cpu out and re installed it, and couldn't get anything on my screen and always got the cpu fail light. Just called to exchange the cpu. Is there something I'm missing?

Did you check for any bent pins on the motherboard?

Didn't see any bent pins on the MB. And I went with a coolermaster hyper 212 evo.

Don't they test each CPU at the factory to be able to bin them? I can't imagine Intel would knowingly ship out a "dead" CPU. My "guess" is that is something other than the CPU, but you will find out once the replacement one arrives.

I'd say there is no chance they shipped a dead CPU. Might have gotten mangled in shipping or you out something together wrong. I assume u had the CPU cooler on when u tried to start it?

Didn't plug in both power cables to the mobo. Was stumbling around on the forum and found the thread explaining for first time builders how to trouble shoot. -__- thanks for the replies though guys!
