intel i5 6600k Overheating Issue

Recently I bought my very first PC, and after setting it up and all I decided to run some games to see if it would work. After playing lighter-load games I decided to run GTA V. Problem here, the game/computer would crash after ~5 minutes. Someone suggested that the CPU might be overheating, and sure enough, it was ~50C in idle and ~90C during load (GTA)

My Build is:
intel i5 6600k
Sapphire R9 380X
Coolermaster Seidon 120V (thermalpaste is one that came with it)
520W Gaming Modular PSU
Silencio 452 Case
SSD 240G
Seagate 2TB Barracuda
4x4GB 2133 G.Skill Ripjaws
ASRock H170 Performance Motherboard.

How do I fix this overheating issue? Has the part gone bad? Or is the airflow bad? I have already taken the build to a store to check on a separate problem, so has it got something to do with the Cooler?

The Temperatures I got were:

~50C in idle
~80-90C when running GTA V, and then the game would crash and the Monitor wont turn on.

I captured the temperatures using MSI Afterburner

Something doesn't sound right, is the cpu overclocked? 90c is getting pretty hot but shouldn't be hot enough to cause shutdowns, intel cpu's don't typically throttle until 100c. The temps do sound quite hot, both idle and under load which sounds like the aio cooler isn't working properly or wasn't installed properly. Check to make sure both hoses are roughly the same temp, if not the pump may not be working properly.

If they feel similar in temperature try remounting the cooler. Clean off the thermal paste with rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth or coffee filter (paper towel if you have nothing else but check for any little pieces of lint), reapply a rice/pea sized dab of thermal paste and reattach the cooler following the directions to make sure no steps or anything are missed.

OK. Il try that. Would there be any possibility that the airflow is bad? I have a Silencio 452, which only has vents on the front and the back, can that be an issue?

Yeah those temps are very high. Even the worst AIO liquid cooler should be able to keep that CPU below 70°C when gaming, even if it's overclocked. And the idle temp shouldn't be that high either -- those are typically 25-35°C.

Bad airflow wouldn't cause the CPU temp to be that high with an AIO, since the radiator has a fan directly on it. Poor airflow might cause temps of other components to be higher than normal though.

omg. I have the exact same issue. I recently bought a gaming pc around 3 months ago with the exact same proccesor but with a gtx9704gb . And ive had the exact same heating issue. Ive recently noticed it around 2 weeks ago where i decided to go to the BIOS and whatnot, and it gave me incredible readings of 80C. So i downloaded an application called Speedfan and when idle i get around 60C but when playing games like csgo or rainbow six siege it goes all the way up to around 80C. Note that this is only the cpu being incredibly hot, my gpu usually runs on around 30-40C when even playing these games. I dont know what to do, but i need a fix fast. I hope its not a defect with the proccesors because theyre fairly new.

I reattached the AIO Cooler (removing thermal paste and reapplying and everything) and the temperature did go down by 20C.. It became something like, 35C idle and 60C while running a lightweight game like Minecraft or CSGO. I played those game for a few hours, but then my CPU started heating up more than it should've have. It became something like, 40C in idle. Anyway, I wanted to see if it could run GTA now, so I booted it up and was playing for like an hour when the same overheating issue happened. My friend, who has the EXACT same CPU and Cooler had no issue whatsoever and his idle temperatures were lower than mine, too.

The same friend tells me that it might be the airflow, as there are little ventilation in the case (front + back.) Surely enough, the inside of the case was really warm... Sorry for being a complete noob but, is this all normal? Should I get my Cooler refunded? Should I completely start over again with my build with another case?

Edit: It was like ~80C when I first started up GTA im guessing it gradually went up from there.

The case shouldn't be causing issues like that. Have you felt your cooler hoses to see if they feel the same temp or if one is fairly warmer than the other? Minecraft is a lightweight game for the gpu but is very cpu dependent, more than many AAA games. If you think it's the case you can try leaving the side cover off. If temps improve greatly then you may need additional cooling fans.

Just because your friend has the same cooler doesn't mean yours isn't acting up, checking the cooling hoses may help determine that. Also lightly press your finger on the cooling block/pump and see if you can feel it running.

I tried remounting the cooler and cleaning off thermal paste. I reapplied thermal paste etc. At first it was fine with idle being 25-35C. But after playing for 4-6 hours the CPU went up to 60C (its not that intesive of a game, either.) My friend, who has the exact same CPU and Cooler, gets 35C. Right now, with idle, its ~38C for me. Is it too high of temperature?

(P.S. I think the problem was Thermal Paste... There was like, 1mm thick of thermal paste on CPU... But now that I have reapplied it with paste only the size of a lentil, I do not know what the problem is... Faulty parts? Maybe since the case has bad airflow the Cooler is sucking the hot air inside my PC and making the CPU overheat too?)

Hi i had the same problem with the exact same config, i would play fallout 4 for 20 min and reach nearly 100c, its a general problem with smaller pumps like the seidon 120v not being able to push water under low speeds, since the pump is variably controlled by the PWM controller which allot of the time the motharboards dont know its a pump and turn up the speeds only when its running super hot not allowing the water to get cooled fast enough by the tiny radiator. i fixed the issue by connecting up a simple fan controller that sets the pump to work all the time on the same speed, i set it to run around the mark where it gets a bit loud but not loud enough to be noticeable outside my case. i cant 100% confirm that its not malfunctioning but it has been happening to allot of people.

i had the same problem with my siedon v120 and 6600k
its a problem with the pump speed, use a fan controller and set the pump to the highest setting (it will be loud) after you have done that check if your temps are any better, if they are not the pump has an issue. if its better then just decrease the pump speed to a point at which it runs well but isn't really loud.

Yes the pumps should always be running at full speed. Only the fans should be running on variable speed, fan curves, pwm etc. The water flow and aio setup is designed to run at a constant flow of water from the cooling block on the cpu to the radiator and back again. If the cooler needs to work harder to keep a cpu cool it does so by adjusting the speed of the fans and controlling how much air is flowing through the radiator, not the water/pump speed as well. When flow drops low as you noticed the temps will rise because effectively the motion of heat from the cpu to radiator has been slowed/stopped. It's a common mistake people make using aio coolers.
