Hi all,

As titles mentioned, what do people think - Intel i5-9600K with a Z390 motherboard or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 with the X570?

I'm looking for a mid range, future proofed build. Casual gaming and browsing etc, not planning to stream, overclock and all that.

Thanks!

@Flayed
Well, you did wrote "...to mitigate against getting the worst grade silicon 3600 from the wafer which requires 1.5v to run stable", never talk about " a few posts" you read or saw in that one.

Anyways, in the begining it was all a mess. People getting higher vcore usage while on idle, people mistaking idle with opening tabs on a browser or watching youtube video (thats not idle), Ryzen cpus ramping up to max single core speed for using google or opening a folder, CPU cooler going up and down all the time, high temps, etc.

Basically like with every single new hardware launch (specially CPUs) for the new/first adopters. And the media (some of them) and the social networks didn't help, they only made things worst.

Once AMD and the Mohterboard vendors released the first Microcode, BIOS updates and Drivers things started to get on track and a month and half later it was all fixed.

AMD still working on a new AGESA update (1004), which motherboard vendors already have so a new BIOS update should be on the streets soon (Wonder what we will get from it?).

True I didn't explain what I meant particularly well in that post. I hope at some point we will see retailers offering nice discounts on the Ryzen 3 models that aren't great value at RRP such as the 3600X and 3800X

Avoid GSync. Get a FreeSync monitor. Nvidia has finally faced reality, and all their 10-, 16-, and 20- series GPUs support FreeSync now.

What resolution at 144Hz are you looking toward? I believe that the decision on the GPU and Monitor are inextricably tied together.

Planning on getting the AMD Ryzen 5 3600, with the RTX 2060 Super.
Frankly, I don't really know much about the resolution/hz or what my set up can achieve, any idea what sort of resolution will work best? Also, maybe not 144hz, just something a tad higher than the current 60hz i have.

The 3600x comes with a better cooler and is clocked slightly higher. Multiple reviewers have stated it is not worth the extra money over the 3600.

The best motherboards depend on your budget.

If the budget is low, an MSI B450 max motherboard will work out of the box.

If the budget is higher, i would go for an ASRock x570 phantom gaming 4 is a decent but lower end x570 board.

The max id spend on a board for a 3600 would be the gigabyte x570 aorus elite. Very good power delivery.

Avoid cheap MSI x570. Very poor power delivery and the cheaper asrock is better.
@NightHawkRMX Thanks for this - since I got swayed to go for the R5 3600, I need to redo my MB research now haha.

I'm wondering, which MB would you recommend I go for with the R5 3600 (probs around the 200£/USD mark like you suggested)? I'd need WiFi, and I believe it's cheaper to get it on the MB than a separate adapter.

I've been looking at the X570 Phantom Gaming 4 WiFi or the AORUS X570 Pro WiFi, but there seems to be a problem with stocks - none had the ATX available, only mini-ITX.

Ones I could find are like the Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI) or the MSI MPG X570 GAMING PRO CARBON WIFI ATX, but wondering if there's a better/cheaper/more efficient one for the 3600 I'm getting.

Appreciate any suggestions/comments/advice.

Those are the cheapest ones with wifi on PCpart picker.

It doesn't seem to be in the UK, so I would go with a board without wifi and add a card.

Decent motherboard (Way more than needed for even an overclocked 3600) and a decent dual band wifi adapter.

Hi all, here's my new finished configuration.

Wondering if anyone has anything to add/say about it, any major issues that I've not spotted perhaps? PC part picker says there might be an issue with my Cryorig H7 on the Tomahawk, so I'm keen to hear from anyone about that.
Many thanks in advance!

PC Part picker is stating that the above cpu cooler may not have am4 brackets. You could use the Scythe Mugen which is arguably the best in it's price category:

Personally, I would avoid B450, with 3rd gen Ryzen.

I am thinking the B550 must be released soon so would be a shame to buy a B450 just before

Yeah, that's my concern exactly! But most reports suggests it would only be available next year onwards... And I kind of wanna make sure of the RTX promo and get COD for free with it now, it ends soon.

@RodroX Yeah, the Asus TUF X570 was my second choice, crazy good reviews about it. Just went for the b450 max instead cause of the cost really, considering I'm only running a 3600, so not really a need to have the x570.

Apparently the MSI X570s are not great at all, the cheaper ones at least.

Next year hmm not sure I can wait that long
