Intel i7 4790 Compatibility

My processor and motherboard seem to be getting older, so I need to start making upgrades. My question is does the Intel i7 4790 only work with lga1150 motherboards?

Thanks for the response. With the upgrades I planned on doing, there was only one lga1150 motherboard that fit with my build and processor the best, and I just found out that it is discontinued most places and out of stock, and has been, everywhere else because it is an older model to what is available now. Do you know which type of processor and motherboard I should look for then that would work with all of the new types and compatibility restrictions? (For example: lga1150 with DDR 3 ram and i7 4790) Also, I realize this may be a tricky question that is hard to answer, so if it is, please let me know. Thanks

so your looking into ddr4 then? it's a bit unclear as to what your asking

Use ebay. (or similar site). They'll have a wide variety of those older generation boards, some brand new, NOS, some refurbished, some used.

For a locked cpu like the 4790,theres no restrictions on the board, you can use any lga1150, but for best compatability and ease of use, stick to the Z97/H97 boards. You could use the Z/H87 boards, but not knowing if there was a prior bios update to include the DC cpu might leave you in a quandary.

I wanted to use my i7 4790 with ddr 3 and a lga 1150 motherboard but i can't find the motherboard that worked, so I wanted to know if I were just to get a new processor and mobo, what pairs up?

Lga1150 and prior (lga1155, 1156, 1366, 2011, 2011-3, some 775 etc) all use DDR3 ram. It's only the newest gen like lga1151 that uses DDR4. Totally different ram, speeds, pin count. You can't physically use different DDR. So whatever ram you do have for that i7 is what you'll use for the new mobo. To get best performance from Windows, games, most apps, you'll want at least 8Gb (2x4Gb) of 1600MHz. Depending on the mobo, you can change that up for more and faster, most Z boards can use 32Gb or 64Gb of upto 3200GHz. Mainly 16Gb (2x8Gb) bought in 1 package of 2400MHz is considered good, higher than that might be problematic since your cpu doesn't OC.

Some 1151 mobos also support DDR3.

But different gen CPU's arent compatible with each other

I don't expect the lga1151 ddr3 boards to last long at all, skylake cpus just don't like 1.5v and if you can find some 1.35v snipers that might work OK. The whole thing is a gimmick imho.
