First time building my own PC (parts list below), and I've finally managed to get it to boot to BIOS. The trouble is, I keep getting a CPU overheating warning, with consistent temperatures of 65-89C. I've removed and reapplied the thermal paste, is there anything else I could do to bring the temperature down?

CPU: Intel i7-6700k 4GHz
Motherboard: ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming/Aura
Air Cooler: Cooler Master CM12V, plus two Corsair chassis fans
PSU: Corsair CX650
GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1050
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB

Solution
Happy to change it - are there any brands/models in particular you'd suggest? Currently looking into ThermalRight's Peerless Assassin Range, but if that's still too modest, I can look elsewhere.

Many possibilities;

Which would depend on how much you are willing to spend and your case width...it would have to be wide enough to accept the cooler. The best coolers are around 160 mm tall, but you could do a lot better with shorter than that.

You could do well for say 40 bucks and somewhat better for 60 or 80. Depends on what temps you would say "that's OK, no need to spend more".

Peerless Assassin is quite good if it will fit in your case.
That is a very VERY modest cooler.

Are you unable or unwilling to change it?

Check the BIOS - what EZ tuning setting is it on? If set on 'performance' it might be pumping too much power into the CPU (which is unlocked) for your cooler, which is equivalent to an Intel retail box cooler (i.e. not very good). Set it back to 'normal', until you fit a better cooler.

Good shout, I'll update the settings and order a better cooler. Thanks, all!

IMHO the Peerless Assassin is good, but kinda overkill for a 6700K which has a TDP of 91W. Fine if you have one (it will keep it nice and cool) but a 4-pipe single tower such as an Assassin X 120 or Spirit is quite capable of handling around 125W.
