Intel i7-7700k or AMD ryzen equivalent(5 or 7) for game development and future proofing.

Hi,
Having to return my parts may have been a blessing in disguise as ive come across a youtuber talk about using amd's for content creation. So far id only considered intel processors (in fact only the i7 7700k) but now i wondering that as I am building this rig for game development (ill probably be gaming now and again, its a gaming rig afterall 😀 and to test play my game) including rendering, modelling, animation using photoshop, unreal engine 4, maya and zbrush, would an AMD ryzen 5/7 or whatever the equivalent generation of AMD cpus to intel kabylake are.

Just in case more info is needed for an answer ill be using either a 1080 or 1080ti GPU and samsung 960 evo ssd with gskill trident z ddr4 3200mhz

im trying to find all these answers myself but ive been reading so much nothing is going in and everything is getting confusing

EDIT: if AMD ryzens are recommended what would be a good motherboard for it as so far ive only looked at lga motherboards

EDIT: forgot to ask. While the upgrade path is dead with i7-7700k for the new i9's whats it look like with threadripper.
Could I swap a ryzen for a threadripper when they get cheaper

an R7 1700 actually costs a tad less than the 7700K these days, and a name brand B350 board should do nicely and save a few dollars over the latest X370-based boards...(I'd start with Asus)
