I currently have the 9940X and im thinking about switching to the 3950X, im just curious if the 3950x runs hotter? Id be cooling it with a Corsair H150i Pro.

This would be an upgrade, but, given the 3950X cost of $750 CPU cost plus a mainboard....just to save 10-15 watts of heat and/or power, and gain 2 cores and a few IPC percentage points? (Is someone else funding this upgrade?)

You could likely downclock by 100-200 MHz within a few clicks in Intel's XTU application and end up with similar power performance...for free.

But, if you render/edit for hours on end for work, and time is money, then, you might decide the 3950X is worth it...as the Intel 12 core vs. 3900X/12 core comparison in Blender or CInebench did have a 3900X outperfoming the 12 core 9920X.....and it is indeed your money.

Good luck on your decision...

I hadn't considered a downclock, which might be a good idea. Im also considering 3900X over both of them. thanks for the information!

Your CPU is better in games at high refresh rate and especially at 1080p.
Why you want to upgrade?
You need the 3950X for professional work like converting, encoding and editing videos and photos?
