Hello. I have an i3 6100 and it runs BF4 at low settings ~50-60 fps. I don't care that much about quality settings but I am thinking of getting r9 380x. For my question the specifics don't matter. Is it better to use the integrated graphics on cpu or use a separate graphics card with the same performance. I'm worried more problems like drivers for the graphics card. I'm also worried about putting more stress on cpu by using it for graphics. I have 8gb ddr4 ram if that helps. Thank you for the help.

Solution

The only noticeable benefit (other than of course a GPU being faster) is that it frees up more memory. Every other benefit you mentioned provides VERY minimal performance changes, to the point they would be barely or not noticeable at all to the user.

The R9 380X is lightyears more powerful than the integrated graphics on your CPU. You will get FAR FAR FAR better performance than your current integrated graphics will put out.

There is no reason to worry about stress, your CPU will be outdated before it could ever be "worn out".

Hi,

Always dedicated GPU better than Integrated one for many reasons, the worst one in my opinion it takes part of your RAM (Unless there is something provided on the MB, not sure about this). Get dedicated GPU and you will have better performance and more games you can play.

Regards,

Whether a graphics device is integrated into your CPU, as with your Intel HD graphics, or exists in your computer as a separate add-in board, like an R9 380x, you still need drivers for full functionality.

On the other hand, not using the graphics on your CPU should allow better thermal performance while gaming. The CPU should run cooler, which in turn, may allow it to turbo boost a bit higher in some cases.

on any cpu with the integrated gpu perform rather poorly exept to the 5775c as it has as far as i know the best igpu on the market
a r9 380x will be a very good upgrade but just wondering have you looked into the 970 rx 480 and 1060?

Thanks for your reply. Yeah I know it'll improve performance but I was wondering if a cpu will work better if it isn't using integrated graphics.

No, there is 0 performance impact on how a CPU operates whether you use the iGPU or not.

mainly it only effects temperature

Thanks for your reply. I did buy the r9 380x for one 190. That is basically in 380 and gtx 960 range. I know the gpu is better but if I got a gpu that is on par with my integrated graphics, will the pic perform better with the discrete card?

Yes, a CPU will work better if it isn't using integrated graphics.

There will be less heat, due to the graphics not sharing the same piece of silicon or same package, using the same cooling device.

There will be less contention for memory bandwidth due to the integrated graphics having to share the same memory bus.

With less heat in the CPU, it may possible be able to use turbo boost to a greater degree, affording even more single threaded performance per core.

Thanks for explaining the drivers part. I went with a discrete card. Great price on newegg.

I did think about the cards but I needed to finish the build before school started and the price was excellent. Those cards you mentioned are great but I'm in a tight budget and don't have much time to get the perfect price or the AIB cards.

Thank you for your reply. I like the part about more memory if using a discrete card heh.

Hello. I chose to go with an excellent deal for gigabyte r9 380x from newegg. I'm getting the feeling if I reply here, you all get a notification so thank you again for all the help.
