Correction, you can't change the CPU in most laptops. A majority of them are soldered to the motherboard, and for those that aren't, you need to find a CPU with the same TDP and socket, which is usually nothing. However, I swapped out the Pentium B830 (Sandy Bridge) in one of my laptops for an Ivy Bridge Pentium B2020M. The improvement was marginal, but the replacement was $5.
