One area of research could look into technologies that allow displaying a 3D hologram of the person you are talking to on the phone,

Seriously? We can't even get video chat to work. Come to think of it, mobile voice isn't even close to being rock solid yet. This is a joke.

Your both wrong in a way. No we should not stop innovating, its important to keep moving forward, but its still important to get things we have now right and get our heads out of the clouds.

im all for innovation....

but why the bloody hell do i need to see a 3D hologram of the person im talking to? it's a bloody cellphone not a telepresence system (how the bloody hell are you suppose to perform a 3D digitization of yourself using a cellphone anyways), really if i needed to see a person that much i go see them in person....

now if this was something like an interactive version of sony's raymodeller for UI then im all for that

I guess somebody has to start researching this if we want it available in the next century.

And so were cell phones in the 80's (giant brick phones) as was the idea of PCs in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Yet look at us now. A PC for every person and cell phones too.

[citation][nom]Fetal[/nom]Intel and nokia, two monsters.[/citation]

Yet without them we would still be in a much worse world tech wise.

Well, the lab is going to experiment. That's how you get new technology. Hell, who knows? maybe they won't find too much that really advances 3D, but what if they experiment and come up with something that can be used somewhere else?

Dupont just recently figured out they could use the Gorilla glass tech they developed half a century ago nearly... New development tech is always good.

What if this research tells techs of the future "they already tried all this... but what if we use the optometric lumonescent inducer fabric they didn't have back then??"

Science and development are based on building on work done before. At least they're trying. If they don't come up with anything, its THEIR money they're using. Unless you're a large enough shareholder with some clout, complaining about a company doing R&D is silly.

And as far as 3D holograms, its entirely possible they find new ways to use these if they are eventually developed. We might not have flying cars in the future, but someone might find a nifty use for them.

[citation][nom]bergieberg[/nom]wtf is the University of Oulu?[/citation]
Well, with Nokia being a Finnish company, I am going to wager that it is a Finnish university.

Yep... google and three seconds of my time answered that gem.

lmfao

Ummm...
Can't holograms already be done?
I know for sure I played a game called "Time Traveler".
It was pretty cool and the first time I had ever seen a hologram right there in front of me. Perhaps they are going to try to make the holograms more mobile? I guess it did say 3D holograms. Right now the holograms are indeed 2D. (So when you look around it, it's like a sprite) For those that don't know it's like playing doom 2 and trying to see behind a monster... it's not 3D it's a sprite so that means no matter where you are looking at it you always see the front.
