According to the inquirer Intel won't be launching its LGA775, PCI Express, DDR2 memory chipset grandsdale and Alderwood won't be appearing 'til early next year. I guess this gives AMD a chance to catch up and master their 90nm transition.

well if that all is true im not suprised. I mean what reason does amd or intel have to push new platforms now if maybe they can fine tune them or fix a problem. Intel isnt exactly dieing now, so there is no rush to get somehting out. Same goes for AMD, thier current products are steady and if intel will wait, amd can too and fine tune thier releases. Its only bad for us lol, things get boring fast

Well If i'm Intel I don't like the idea of losing the edge, wouldn't like the idea of losing to AMD in games.

well yeah but its not like they are loosing market share at this point, they seem confident in thier marketing machine to cover up anything amd can promote

In the history pretty much, AMD's always behind, they make a processor after Intel, then hopefully using their marking system to match to Intel's sheer frequency performance. Now AMD's coming out with model numbered processors before Intel actually reaches that frequency, so Intel's doing the catch-up now.

scottchen, you got it all wrong. what THEINQ meant is that although the new chipsets are to be introduced this june (it apears in their IDF papers in blue bold fonts) they understand it wont get mainstream till 2005. meaning that at the first 6 months (atleast) their new chipsets will be aiming mainly at the enthusiast level of computer users.

so, dont worry. we are still going to see the RDRAM like LGA775 socket :-/ (i hope it will dissapear after one year. that new socket looks to be horrible to consumers)

On this remark

Your wrong. What happens is both company Leap Frogs each other. Let take 1 ghz. Amd was the frist. Ok when Intel p4 came out Up untel Amd 2000+ Amd was faster. Then from 2400 to 3200+ Amd was lagging. Then Amd fx Came out and Was about even with Intel. Then the last amd fx. Amd Seem to be the faster of the two

What this is called is leap frogging. It happing in Video cards. It happens With hard drives. And it happen with CPU.

That is what Makes Both Amd and Intel Great machines. For one never in the lead for long. They have to keep trying to out due each other. And each seems to have slow peaks Like intel Now.

And if you think I m pro Amd. Then question why I have a p4 3.4ee L3 2 megs cache Laptop. And a Amd 1800 Desktop.

Why well it looking at what best at the time. I wanted a laptop and it had to have alot of space. Now my old computer I wanted two hard drives and 1.5gb of ram. And at the time it was the fastest computer out.

This will tell you One Main Fact. Amd Intel Or Imac. Are never in the lead for long for each computer company has to Out do each other. (I will never get a Imac)

I think Intel can only jump back if the Pentium M is stronger.
And that will take a few years, untill then AMD is king of the Hill.
Intel is now paying the price for adds like : MHz means performence !)

Hey, nice leapfrogging theory... Makes sense.

BTW, indeed, this thread has the most misleading first post ever. Scottchen got this a little on the wrong side; these things happen.

(imagine if indeed Intel didn't launch alderwood this year? Poor Intel, they better do something quickly!)

You mean "paying the price" like this: http://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/releases/20040413corp_a.htm?

If i would have invested my money in AMD when i said i was a couple months ago i would have an extra 1500 dollars in my pocket right now. Which is a nice chunk of change for me. :)

The computer industry is on weird ground. Perfect example is i'm trying to fix this kids computer.. it's an old 550mhz compaq. Running slowwww as f*ck. Trojans.. Spyware all the good stuff you could imagine.

Well, after i ad-awared it.. spybot'd it and went through and deleted files in DOS and through the registry. Now it runs a hell of a lot faster. Definately great for web browsing.. Email .. and streaming video. Music..
Everything most of the public uses. Luckily there are dads out there that want a faster computer just becuase.. :)
Really Intel has nothing to worry about unless AMD makes the consumers worry that 64bit is the only way.. somewhat on how DVD companies did to VCR's.

No, i was more thinking about Intel changing 180 degrees.
Hey Joe Smoe`s, we(intel) always told you MHz means performence, but that was a lie, just to make you buy our CPU`s.
I`ts more losing face ;)

Actually, Intel never explicitly said Mhz means performance. They always referred to their processors as "the fastest", but they never said "Mhz = performance". Thinking that is the average Joe's problem.

lol oh come on, just becuase they never came out and said it, you surely can see they pushed it that way. I dotn think you can deny they wanted to market the mhz and not as worried about the performance in some cases.

They didn't exactly 'Push' it that way - They just kept selling CPUS in the same manner everyone always has  ..

It was only AMD who tried to do things differently.

Although Intel did say a Celeron would make your internet faster! True or not, they forgot to add it makes everything else slower...

You should read more carefully. From your link:
"CHIPSETS FROM Intel that support PCI Express, wi-fi, DDR-2 and LGA 775 aren't likely to start selling in quantity until next year."

Of course not. A new platform always takes at least 6 months, up to a year to ramp in volume. Same will apply with S939, PCI-E, etc.. but this does not mean it won't be *launched* in june or so, as planned, and it will most likely be available if you really want one.

"ntel's Grantsdale and Alderwood chipsets aren't slated to be introduced until Q2, although recent roadmaps seen by the INQ say there's going to be a delay with some flavours because of a bug."

Q2 of *this* year obviously. No changes here AFAIK, except for the rumoured "PAT" bug in the 925 which might delay it with a month or two, or initially ship without "PAT". Hardly big news.
