I recently updated windows to h20...my system had alot of crashes in the past, i had 32 gb of ram, so i recently took 2 sticks out and its running better, but the update intel octane or whatever starts off telling me to press f1 to bios and change to a raid setting so no unknown issues happen. i usually go into bios and just exit, and windows then starts normally and is very stable with not one crash yet. im reluctant to change anything as if its not broke dont fix it. i have a picture of the first boot message

https://ibb.co/Tg6T9yW is the pic...something went wrong when trying to insert. technology is wrecking my head these days.

spec:
intel i7 8086k 4 ghz 6-core
asus prime z370-a atx Lga1151
2 x corsair vengeance lpx 16gb ddr4-2400
samsung 860 evo 1 tb 2.5" ssd
windows 10 home edition - h20 updated

first boot message

many thanks in advance.

Well, the message is from the bios so if you want to stop it, you will need to adjust something in there.

Did you make PC? I assume if you did that you know if you actually have any optane in an m.2 slot (you only have 2 so if you do, it would be obvious although hidden under a gpu
if you only have 1 drive, it shouldn't be in raid anyway so is it set to AHCI?

You could try going into save & exit screen of bios and loading optimised defaults if it is a choice

Ok thanks for repy. Yes i built pc, and its been a nightmare with crashes...this is first time it has been stable....very stable. Yea theres one m.2 slot which is vacant, i have one ssd connected to sata connection...thats it. So i should just restore bios defaults or jump the battery?
Il check bios and see if ssd is set to AHCI?

If i touch anything, and just go to bios, and exit again it boots to windows normally.

You have two m.2 slots.
Make sure both are empty.

I have one m.2 slot its empty, i know thats for a different drive...my ssd is connected via the first sata im nearly sure...heres an image link for the bios settings for ssd...everything seems ok from what people told me to check.
https://ibb.co/Rjvmx37

there is a default (f5) button...im thinking that restores to default settings...rather than jump the battery.

anyways system is running stable af...not one crash...tbh thats why i had to update to h2o...cause it melted for the 40th time so i was reinstalling...but thats first time i seen this intel optane update.
Any expertise would be appreciated

if your drive is currently set up as AHCI and you swap to that other one, the pc won't boot. and it might corrupt windows,
here are the proper steps for setting that up - see answer, not question - https://community.intel.com/t5/Intel-Optane-Memory/is-there-a-program-to-check-out-where-the-problem-may-be/td-p/680955?profile.language=it but don't do it now.

that mode isn't necessarily new - https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?92682-Confused-about-Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-vs-AHCI-for-NVMe-M-2-SSD

can you run speccy and confirm you don't have optane as we need to work out why your PC is showing these warnings. Did you update bios recently? If not, maybe you should.

Your screen shots are showing sata devices, not the m.2
the m.2 slots are labelled as m.2_1 & m.2_2 and I assume they would be the same in the bios... yes. they show on page 3-19 of your manual here, but its just settings for them, not anything like the Advanced/PCH storage screen

PCIE storage often shows on different tabs in bios.

if you had any m.2 device in slot 1 it would disable Sata port G_1 but your screen shot here shows its currently got a 1 tb ssd in it - https://ibb.co/Rjvmx37
so if there is any optane in PC its in m.2_2

I have speccy...but it just gives me data on each section...ie OS system, CPU, RAM, Motherboard, graphics, storage, optical drives etc....
Ive reinstalled loads of times cause of crashes which i think may be down to a dodgy ram stick which i removed 2 sticks of 8gb...leaving 2 sticks of 8gb...the system has been flawless since, and i never touch anything else...everything is up to date even the ssd...the only difference i noticed this time round, was that intel optane update being downloaded via windows h20 update...ive never had this before ever...until i seen it updating and downloading it...so windows update has something to do with it. Il check the m.2 slots but i assure you theres nothing in them...theres a wifi adapter in a PCI-E slot 0...thats all...i never changed anything....only this is my first time using the h20 update.

I feel like dumping it tbh...too much stress this <Mod Edit>.

Colif what would you like from speccy under them sections i listed?

I should take a look inside just to confirm theres nothing in the m.2 and m.2_2 slots, but i assure you...ive never stuck anything near them...all i have id ssd in sata one....but il double check.
Thanks for help...wish i could solve it....but i might bring it to a specialist...my experience from custom pcs and computers in general these days, is just endless and endless troubleshooting....with absolutely no light at the end of the tunnel. Jeez i miss my old dell pc..even though it was <Mod Edit> speed compared to this 4ghz engine...at least there was no stress involved with endless troubleshooting

Summary area would show it if you had any I think.

what does it show in the storage area. i believe that is where it would show optane.

if you don't physically have it, why is your bios saying that warning. It might have started with 20H2 or at same time, but I don't see how windows can change that aspect unless it included an update for Intel rapid storage Technology drivers.

good luck with repairs.

Did you do BIOS update recently?
May need to go into BIOS and save BIOS settings.

BTW second M.2 slot is behind protective heat sink.
You can see it in this review:

yea i know where the slot is...im certain there is nothing in it...i built this pc for Music Production, i only have a 1tb samsung ssd in sata 1, thats all i need bar a focusrite soundcard. this issue only arose after the last reinstallation as i was having lots of crashes which i think was down to a bad ram stick. i had 4 x 8gb...so i reduced it to 2...and its been as stable as ever for the first time. so after 2 yrs of trying to figure that problem out which i now believe to be a bad ram stick...im faced with this out of nowhere if ya get me....
theres alot of driver updates this time round with intel, including 1 system, 2 extensions, 2 software components...im thinking it has to do with that. but thats too deep for me.

yea the bios is 2401....il check again but i nearly sure its the latest.

thanks for your info.

ive just been pressing f1 into bios and exiting again to workaround it...no crashes so far...but i would love to get peace of mind sorted. nothing has worked, i resetted default settings in bios and that didnt work...and thats been the common thread to try from people. it only happens on first boot after i shut it down fully. obviously a driver was installed in the update? and now the widows is confused not booting from ssd first boot...thats the vibe i get

ok i took some snapshots of my connections, and also came across a thread with some other guy with similar problem...from what he said, the middle sata connections use the m.2 ports also, and that bios settings need to be changed accordingly...so much for these things to be simplified...i honestly think in ten years, il be out of the technology loop at this rate lol.
anyways first image will be the screenshot of this guys thread, and the rest will be picks of my set up. hopefully i got something in the wrong place, but i dont think so.

yea funny theres a bios update as of yday....im gonna flash it, but from what ive read on asus site, theres a load to it...not like i did last time...it use to be take the .cap file onto flash, and boot with that...now it seems ya have to rename another file and a whole other process...so not sure if il chance that yet until i research.

thanks for any replys

Yea...well i pressed f5....which is default settings...then "save and exit"...to which it says youve made no changes. You have to click save and exit anyway....

Anyways i think something needs to be changed either in hardware connecters or from bios settings....il update bios as one has been released yday. But if the sata connections are used as m.2 as well...then that could be the confusion...ive never had this before and never changed anything...so its a real head scratch....ive always hooked ssd to sata 01 connector...and never touched the bios and it worked grand without this situation...only i had lots of crashes and reinstallation of windows cause of corrupt files....maby that had something to do with it....although i took out 2 ram sticks...its running so stable, that the crashes from before are between them 2 areas...

If you suspect ram issue, then run memtest86.
Check cpu temperatures. You can use MSI afterburner for this.

How exactly those "crashes" are happening? Do you get BSOD? Aplication closes and crash to desktop? System shutdown? System reboot? What?

BTW - what make/model PSU are you using?

yea i ran memtest86 for a whole day...nothing. yea lots of bsod...every kind, mainly memory management, power failure, kernal system, just everything, windows files always got currupted, sfc would stop fixing...then id do a chkdsk and bang,,,that would melt it. no recovery options ever worked. once i was able to restore from system image...but was once in around 2yrs...even few weeks after that it or days i would just get them again.

this is first time i havent had one crash, and its also the first time i decided to remove 2 ram sticks. a guy i chatted to one time said mostly if your system is crashing like this, its down to a faulty ram stick...hes a programmer.

heres a screenshot of my parts...there compatible on pc part picker so.

https://ibb.co/9tm1FSd

and i did notice that a red circle on one ram stick, so it wasnt identical to the other 3...there same make and all...but it just had a red mark on it. it was also very close to the heatsink...like a millimetre...maby something electrical was occuring
