News Intel officially cuts Core Ultra 7 200-series desktop CPU prices by up to 25%

Why in the world would anyone buy a Core Ultra 5 now that the 7 costs the same price? Are Intel stupid?
My guess is that the 5 series is the bread-and-butter of companies like Dell who sells mid-range desktops to business by the tens-of-thousands. So Intel can sell it's top-of-the line, and it's mainstream business processors, but the 265's are kind of in a rut.

It might have swayed me to pull the trigger on one, but, all signs point to 1851 being a one-off socket. That might make it worth spending more later to avoid. ...pondering...

Wouldn’t be a bad move. That’s similar to what amd did with fx a little over 10 years ago just to be able to move something.
Ten years ago?
AMD had to do it just last year, within the launch month, they shot themselves in the foot with the x3d CPUs and now nobody wants the regular lineup.

If the 265K were to drop into the $250 range I would pull the trigger. I am not a hardcore gamer and mostly use my PC for productivity, yet do not need a 9900 or 9950 and the non X3D lineup is completely lackluster.
