Question Intel Optane or Samsung ?

I'm looking at building a new computer; not sure of all of the specs but latest Intel CPU at least. I was looking at the "Intel 480GB Optane 900P PCIe 3.0 x4 Internal SSD" or the "Samsung 500GB 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 Internal SSD".

I will be using this desktop for creation, specifically Photography using Canon's Digital Photo Professional and Adobe Photoshop / Bridge and some Lightroom. I do use Premiere Pro from time to time. I'm looking for speed in rendering large megapixel photos.

970 EVO for sure...No contest.

I am new to Optane and still studying it. My impression is that it's supposed to be faster? Is there a more recommended method of implementing it?

An Optane drive is "faster", at 3 times the price over an NVMe drive (970 EVO), or 4-5x the price over a SATA III SSD.
And it very much depends on what you use this system for.

The value of an optane device is in the very low latency times.
You pay a goodly price for that on a 900P.

For sequential access, the 970 evo is better and that, I think, is more applicable to your workload.

Optane is inflated $$$ , 970 is plenty fast and reliable.

At 5x the price per GB, no.

I do a lot of that same use, on regular SATA II SSD's.

A 970 EVO would be better for that use case.

Optane cache on top of an SSD makes zero difference.

For your use case, the 970 is at the top of the realm.

A small 16/32gb module is of use only to act as a cache for a conventional HDD.
For that, it is effective.

If price is no object or the 32gb size is not a problem optane can be a very good way to go.
Optane is supported only on modern Intel motherboards.
