Hi.
So I just retired my ancient intel system, and suddenly found me with 2 machines in my living room. One to use and one to sell, but I cant decide and hoped for help!

The one board is the ATX AM4, "MSI X470 gaming plus":
X470 gaming plus
This is an older board but with 2 m.2 3.0 slots in addition to 2x PCI 3.0 16X for future updates if necessary and several pci 2.0 slots. It also have 4 ram slots and 6 sata slots.
It supports all cpus up to the Amd ryzen 9 5950X with 12 cores.

The other one is the m ATX LGA1700, "Asus Prime H610M-K D4":
PRIME H610M-K D4
This is a newer board with 1 m.2 slot also running at pci 3.0, but it does support a pci 4.0 x16 graphic cards. It has 2 ram slots and 4 sata slots.
It supports all intel 14?. gen up to i9-14900 with 24 cores.

As of cpus currently he 2 cards have an Ryzen 5 2600 and an intel i3-12100F. It seems the intel even with fewer cores is best for the short term.

So the question is which to choose? In terms of futureproofing, upgrading and expanding somewhat. I do some overclocking but not alot. But Iv already seen the intel can get 2666 ram to 3200 easily. (previous owner)
The rest of my setup is several 3.5 disks, a ssd, a 2060, and im planing to buy a 1tb m.2.

Check BIOS revisions to be sure, but the X470 should take up to Ryzen 5xxx, which would be a nice path.

The H610 could possibly go to 14th gen but the H chipset should be fairly feature sparce.

In theory the 13th/14th gen Intel would be more powerful than a 5800X, but would probably research some benchmarks just to be sure.

Pcie 4 makes no difference to the GPU. On paper the slot is capable of more but cards don't take advantage of it to any noticeable extent.

That aside, if you're fine with just one m.2 I'd go with the Intel setup.

The 12100f is a much faster CPU, than a 2600, but that board will hold you back upgrade wise. It's poor power delivery will thermal throttle with an i7/i9. The x470 board can be paired with a 5700x3d/5800x3d without it cooking itself.

Now thats new and worrysome. So your saying the VRM on this intel board is bad. So atleast all cpus with base 125W and turbo 253w is gonna hurt? So if I choose the intel id maybe need to limit myself to the low end turbo cpus, like the i5-12600k with 117w turbo or maybe pushing the I5-13600/14600 with 154w turbo?

Are you doing any heavy work on your PC?
Will you even need a CPU with that high of a power draw?
For gaming all of these CPUs will run well enough and will give you a good performance boost, if you have a good enough GPU, they will only throttle at rendering and other full load scenarios.

You have to be a little bit wary of this, pushing the ram controller on the CPU can wear it out making it harder to keep up good ram speeds, that's the same for both intel and amd.

That's an excellent point TerryLaze. I'm just trying to make sure I get the best deal possible. Iv been using my now retired rig a 1. Gen i7 for quite a few years, and I like my systems to last while upgrading used cpuz on the way. But I see your point, I might not need those extreme cpuz, and even a 12600k should be able to deal with a ryzen 9 5950x which is the best non 3d cpu for the amd rig.
So while the intel card might not be able to take the top cpuz, it still should be able to match the aging am4 platform on the normal cpuz.

You’ll probably find it easier to sell the X470 board than the H610 as it’s got more features of interest to enthusiasts. But you should keep it if you’re an enthusiast 😀

Yes I see that. Unfortunately the x470 isent that great of a board itself. It's a mid range ok board with decent heatsinks to make the 4 phase vrm survive ok. But yeah most wil see "gaming" and go nuts.

It seems its either stick with the intel board, or sell both rigs and buy something better.

Now it's just deciding if I should use my "cooler master storm Stryker" or "phanteks enthoo pro" case to keep it in.
